I know newer trucks have some sort of system to have the air flow over the tail gate. 1st gens dont have that. Ive been driving with my tail gate down for a while and there isnt really a significant change in the MPGs

    yup

With the tailgate up there is a cyclone of air that circulates and over in the bed that creates a "bubble" so air flowing over the truck stays out of the bed and increases aerodynamics. With the tailgate down or missing, air flows over the cab, and directly down on the bed, creating down-pressure and works against the motor.

    my rudimentary illustrations:

    True.
Had an empty plastic bag in the back of my F-150 doing that once...

It might depend on the cab design, bed length, etc though.

another good way to visually see it is to put a shit load of leaves in your bed, and watch them swirl around as you drive.

So there is little to no negative cab circulation without the tailgate?

My train of thought: this turbulence bubble which is helping gas mileage, isn't it still partially there, similar to the bubble behind semi's even they have no tailgate/bed? Or is my logic horribly flawed :p

The bubble behind semis is actually hurting the semis' performance because the vacuum is trying to pull the truck backwards.

Upgraded 2002 Tacoma to 2018 Tundra
We had a new Toyota dealer's grand opening today with very good deals. I took my Tacoma and thought about trading it on a Tundra. I took the Tundra for a test drive and loved it, but when I had to start thinking about parting with the Tacoma I just got in the truck and left. I don't know how I will ever part with it; it became part of me.
I loved the Tundra, but the Tacoma is just so much easier to drive and park. I could again see why the 1st gens are so popular for wheeling.
