2 Satoshi Questions

Hello all! I have but two questions so here they are. Below you will see my progress on my grill. I've already sanded 60 grit,220 grit,400 wet sand and everythings all cleaned up. In the picture i have a LITTLE bondo still on there.

1. Can i paint over the fiberglass as is, or do i need to cover it up with bondo/hardner. Its the only thing stopping me from finishing it up today.
2. How would i prep the metal mesh for paint? Im painting it black of course.

All beneficial responses are welcome!

 

HomerTaco told me you can get some degreaser and clean it off and spray. That just leaves your first question.

I'd skim coat the fiberglass and hit it with some fine grit before Id paint it.

 

I'd hit it all with an even coat of filler primer.

 

Done and done. Its very smooth to the touch

This damn can is running off. Its cold outside. i got one coat on but ill have to wet sand it off. O.- so... gay.

 

so your doing the inside white? Should be interesting! I thought about doing mine that way...tuned in to see how it turns out.

 

I would say slow down a little. Anything you can see when it is primed will show up 10 times worse when you paint. Use 3m green tape if you don't want anything to bleed over and be careful with your tape lines. Sharp or overlapping tape lines will create a ridge that is a PITA to sand out. Multiple light coats will get you a lot farther than heavy coats. Temperature is important, so you might have to heat up the material a little bit. Good on ya for tackling it. Looks easy but it is actually a big job.

 

If you are doing that outside, wait for a warmer day. It's way too cold for the primer and paint to cure right.

 

lol thats what the flash did. Its actually gray "filler primer".

I see what you are saying. I've never spray-canned anything before. I waited till 5:00 when it was around 50ish. ill try again tomorrow.

 

If you are like me and have to get this done now get some space heaters and heat up the garage, unplug them before you paint but it has worked for me in the past

 

practice on a piece of cardboard or an old can or bottle. When you are doing the final coats, you don't want to mess up.

 

Ill set up my dad's kerosene heater and do that tommorow. It will be on my truck, it cannot look tacky.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I've been sooo anxious to get it done, ive been holding it off till i had enough money to get all the supplies at once. I suppose ill have to do it all in stages. First, making sure i know how to use a spray can. lol

 

UPDATE:

I decided today to not worry so much on the grill as it is December..

But i did make progress on the mesh side of the satoshi

My mounting strategy: Epoxy!

 

Update time! I got the grill primed right this go found and I need to fill in a couple cracks with bondo next weekend. On another note I have the grill mesh primed and painted! pics will be up when I get back to my laptop.
