why IFS?

OK, for real. Why did Toyota, and most manufacturers, go to IFS from a solid axle?

My thoughts are: cost, better articulation. How nice would it be if there was a SAS factory option.

How long before the rears are independent as well....?

 

A million times better street driving because thats what everyone uses them for.

 

Because IFS is better suited towards 90% of the people who buy the Tacoma.


A SFA FJ would make more sense than a SFA Taco (stock) from Toyota at this point...

 

It'll be a long time before the rears have an independent suspension. It's a lot more expensive to make the rear independent vs. the front because of the steering. The rear is also very strong and very low maintenance as it stands with a solid axle. A few trucks do have independent rear suspension such as the Honda Ridgeline and the Denali Pick up.

I would argue that IRS is just around the corner for Tacos. For the same reason that they went to IFS.....ride quality. Most people don't buy these things to do what some of us do with them...they want ride quality/safety. With the other manufacturers going to IRS, Toyota has to at least acknowledge it......?

 

I believe the only denali pickup with IRS was the concept vehicle and the ridgeline isnt a truck, its built on the same frame as the odyssey.

 

because toyota wanted to build a mustang competitor. Since the mustang has an IFS front with a solid axle rear, toyota was all "fuck you bitches, we can do that shit too. Hell, we'll make the fucker a 4x4 truck. Suck on that, Amerikans!"

 

Calling the Ridgeline a POS is a bit naive.....but I didn't buy one for other reasons.
And I don't know if your second reason make much sense. "liking SRA" vs "slight ride quality". Yeah I don't know. It would be a lot more than "slight" too. What rear shocks do you have on your Taco?

 

Those were ok with the OEM rear springs.....but the OEM rear springs sag, and then you have to get some super duty shit to replace it....and then you have to replace the shocks, and then it becomes a mess back there....(from what I've dealt with). Rancho 5*00? 5800? Adjustable....either way. It rides great with 300 lbs of sailboat batteries in the box now.

I've always fancied the idea of a front and rear long travel independent suspension. The original HUMVEE is front and rear independent and it's no slouch off-road.

 

The Denali with 4 wheel steering I believe had IRS, not just the ones that are a trim package. I don't even know if they still do the 4 wheel steering anymore. As far as the Ridgeline, you're right, it's not a rugged truck but everyone I know who owns them say it rides like a Honda Accord and will still haul/tow anything the typical home owner would need to move. The solid axle is much stronger in the rear so I think it'll be a long time before the Tacoma gets IRS if it ever does. IFS doesn't really bother me. Independent suspension is actually better in a lot of ways, including better ground clearance because you don't have the differential hanging down. Look at the original H1, independent suspension done correctly and added clearance because of the gear reduction at the wheels.

I think that was one of those things that was neat in theory but when it comes down to it, if you can't drive your truck, 4 wheel stearing isn't going to help. Plus it made the truck look ridiculous IMO.
