    Just the basics
No need to lock this one down. People who have used and printed out the crib sheet can share the success of the hard work it took David K to produce. I have it printed in my truck and oh the places I've been with stock suspension in my TRD OR Tacoma. Thank you.

    Hey guys,

I was just wondering if anyone has had there brakes overheat and TRAC/ATRAC shut off? If ATRAC doesn't stop wheel spin, but just matches wheel rotation per axle, then full throttle would allow significant 4 wheel spinning in low traction situation and eventually overheat the brakes and shut off. Just curious if this has happened to anyone.

I haven't got to run my truck on the beech yet. I keep planning a camping trip to Padre, but the damn red tide "will kill your dog".

Instead of posting hear-say, I can only verify my experiences. I was in low range with A-TRAC on for a good 3 hours on the Santa Maria Mission trail run... this is Baja's version of the Rubicon trail... or worse. My A-TRAC never shut off, my brakes never failed.

I have read that if it ever does over-heat, it is only disabled a short time. You still have a rear locker IF the A-TRAC did shut off and you needed to move right then.

My wife used to drive her Jeep CJ-5 on the Rubicon (she went to high school at Tahoe)... She is the one who said that the MSM run was the closest thing Baja has to the Rubicon. I take her word for it.

A-TRAC is maximum traction for conditions in which you should be in Low Range for... Not for sand driving... only if you dug in because your tires were over-inflated (or perhaps if you turned off you High Range traction system (TRAC) and were wheeling with just open differentials. Then A-TRAC can crawl you back to the surface... at which time, you should return to H4 (TRAC ON).

And you should expect damage on the Mision Santa Maria run, as well... All three of my Tacomas had a rock bash under the side of the truck, in addition my bumper got pulled coming down a rock face... haven't you seen my rear bumper tweek?

Still not a fair comparison to the Rubicon Trail by a long shot

meh..trail damage means nothing, can happen on any trail regardless of difficulty. and as far as the rear bumper goes..it's weak.

example...here's my 2nd stock bumper out of 3 that i trashed on the trail..this one happened on Cleghorn, which is a mediocre trail at best that can be done with 2wd. can i compare Cleghorn to the Mission Santa Maria Trail in difficulty because i trashed my rear bumper on it? no, that would not be a fair comparison now would it?

I doubt it, it would be better to switch trucks since it needs the hydraulic brake booster to operate and whatever electronics to monitor tire spin and take action more than the standard TRAC already does.

Let me ask you, did the salesman just not explain that the Off Road has all the equipment for traction (rear locker and A-TRAC) and the Sport is only a 'looks' package, with no additional traction devices over all other Tacomas? I ask this because you are not the first Sport owner who didn't know how much more came with the Off Road and was lured to the Sport by the hood scoop (much the way the ancient sailors were lured to the rocks by the songs of the sirens)...

it would be cheaper and easier to install front and rear lockers than to try and install ATRAC.

Youd have more traction with lockers too
