Vibration

I have a 2003 dcab with a 3" lift and a 2" lift in the rear. At 50-60 mph I have bad vibrations. I've searched and believe i've narrowed it down to a bad driveshaft angle and a bit of axle wrap. But what do I do about it?

its not a lot but if you watch closely you'll see it.

 

Maybe carrier bearing? Shouldn't really be the axle wrap, especially on normal roads.. but meh. Have you checked to make sure the ubolts are tight?

 

I have not. I will check on that. idk if this has anything to do with the vibes but i can move the drive shaft around inside of the bracket.

 

Have you replaced the carrier bearing,and/or put in a bearing drop?
With the vibes at higher speeds-- are the tires new?
Usually lower speed vibes have been linked to carrier bearing--less tha 45mph.
Are the vibes "under foot" or to the rear of the truck. Sometimes it is difficult to determine where they are orginating.
I went thru all the driveshaft BS- Finally put it on a lift--FRONT wheel bearing is worn-not time to replace YET.
Mechanic said"Wait till i get worse.
Symptoms--during cooler weather-below 40F--vibes at different speeds below 45mph.
After "warm up" the vib goes away--He reported that the bearing is warming up and that the colder tires transmitt the vibes TOO.
Best bet--put it on a lift--see exactly where is coming from.
Take the mech a cup of coffee and a donut--he will probably do it for FREE!!

 

the tires are new, they have approx 2k on em. i checked the bolts that i thought were necessary to the drive shaft and axle and all bolts are tight. I'm contacting a friend who professionally installs lifts to see what he says about it.

 

Check the EASY stuff FIRST--first thing that I thought of was TIRE balance.
Putting it on the lift is your best bet--you can isolate the area where it is originating.

Where do you feel the vibe? Steering wheel? Or floorboard/seats?

Didn't see anything in the vid that seemed out of the norm. The 3rd member flexing up and down is not excessive.

 

another vote for the carrier bearing. ....get up under there and give the driveshaft a good shake around the bearing. ..if it sounds crunchy, it's bad.

 

You probably have a little axle wrap (most do without upgrades to springs)

but you can rule it out as far as vibrations at 50-60mph. you might want to drop your carrier an inch if you can rule out the easy stuff(tires.tire pressure, etc

 

Get the tires rebalanced, most places will do it for free if you just got them installed. Tire shops seriously mess up balancing very often. If nothing else at least you will be able to rule it out. Might also try to get them road force balanced if you can. Some tires are probably more susceptible to this type of imbalance than others.

If you feel it in the steering wheel its tires/brakes, etc.. related.

If you feel it in the body/seats its either u-joints, carrier bearing, or driveline angle.

I had a bad vibe between 45-50mph and it was the two replaceable u-joints on the driveshaft. Replaced them and the carrier bearing, and it went away. (carrier bearing had some sag/play)
