El Cheapo Heated Mirrors

Got some bad news and some worse news (for me anyway).

I ordered Sienna mirrors from the dealer (part #s 87931-AE020 & 87961-AE020). They were $51/ea. and seem to be a great fit....without the black back-plate around the glass!!!

Oh well, I decided to see how close they were to clipping in the housing anyway....NOPE! Dunt Wurk!

Okay, I just have to separate the glass and put it in the Tacoma housing. Easy right? Yup.

So I'm putting the regular mirror back in the housing, pushing pretty hard to get the bottom to clip back in, and the mirror folds-in backwards. I lost my footing, and CRUNCH.....stepped on my NEW GALDURN MIRROR!!!

It would have been a hilarious sight to behold, had it not happened to me.
I hope at least one of my neighbors got to see it.
Imagine a grown man pushing on his side mirror, the mirror folds backwards, he slides down the side of his dirty-ass truck, and steps on his OTHER mirror...then the cursing ensues.

Anyway, rant over. New mirror on order. Now I have to wait an extra 2-3 days to get these assholes installed.

 

Shitty luck!! How do they fit on the mirror backings? Are they the same shape as the Tacoma glass?

I heard from the connector supplier- he thinks the plug housing is the same as the Toyota one. He says color is irrelevant, because Sumitomo supplies same plug in 8 different colors. Unfortunately, they don't have them in stock right now.

 

They seem to be an exact fit, just a different backing. I will confirm once I get the other mirror, and will start to disassemble and transfer to the Tacoma back-plate. I'm thinking rather than using silicone I will use super-strength 3M automotive tape. It's high temp, weather resistant and similar to what is used from the factory on these.

 

I went to the dealer's lot and traced out the Sienna mirrors of a 2011. Seems like they are a bit "pointier" in one corner. I wonder if it depends on the year model of the Sienna. Your part number is for 2006. Seems like 2004 and newer should fit, but I am not sure if the newest models are slightly different.

Well, I've read through this thread several times. I'd like to get a roll up of all the parts needed in order to make this happen. Trying to make this look as factory/finsihed as possible. Here's what I'm tracking for my install:

• Mirror heating elements (purchased from ebay: UNIVERSAL MIRROR GLASS DEFOGGER - HEAT GRID 6.3 x 4.2 (130607655324)
• Toyota Highlander mirror heater switch (PN: 84871-48030)
• Amber bulb: 90011-01058
• 12V 10A SPDT relay
• 12V 5-pin relay socket
• Wire (14g or 16g)
• Add-a-circuit
• Heat shrink

I am needing the part # for the plug that goes to the Highlander switch. Would also appreciate a sanity check on my list above. Didn't want to go the Sieanna mirror route or use an aftermarket switch. Is there anything else I need? Lastly, has anyone figured out a way to turn on/off the heated mirrors in conjunction with the front window defroster? Thanks.

 

Harness plug housing is 90980-10789. Unfortunately it does not come with terminal. You need 5 repair splice number 82998-12340 to complete the assembly. Unfortunately the splices are over $5.00 each from Toyota, hence we have been trying to find a cheaper supplier.

 

If you get the OEM plug (90980-10789) but don't want to pay $30+ for the repair terminals, these are the ones I ordered. It will cost about $7 for 5 terminals.

Man-o-Man...after reading through 18 pages and looking at various diagrams, I'm not sure I want to tackle this. I need to though as I'm tired of foggy, frosted mirrors in the morning! I'll have to go back through and make a parts list, unless post #351 (member Sigo) is correct. I have a week off at the end of this month and will have to attempt it.

 

I agree, it seems like a lot to get organized. But if someone is doing it, I would greatly appreciate a "shopping list" of part numbers and where to get them. We could even fancy it all up with pictures.
This is a great mod and I am convinced I need it done to my Tacoma, living in New Brunswick (Canada).

 

I think BensonX is planning to do a pictorial of his install once it is finished. If not, I will probably do it.

 

Yup, I plan to do complete write-up with fancy pictures 'n everything. Still waiting on a couple things to show up on Monday, so it'll probably get done next weekend. I'll keep you guys posted.

So I wanted to make sure my OEM Sienna Mirrors (part#s 87961-AE020 & 87931-AE020) fit the Tacoma back-plate (they do 84Hilux...perfect fit, phew). The Tacoma back-plate WILL need to be modified to accommodate the male tab terminals on the back side of the Sienna mirror glass (see below). Here's some pics of the Tacoma mirror VS. the Sienna mirror.

Nice! Those are really nice heating elements- look like they cover more of the mirror than the elements on the Burco mirrors. And they are about the same price to boot.

 

how did you make an electrical connection to the back of those mirrors? What are those male tabs constructed of?

 

Those are the OEM Toyota Sienna mirrors. They come like that. Click the parts #'s I referenced.

 

I was able to find the mirror part # and the site to order them, but its just the mirror glass ... Was wondering how an electrical connection was made. It looks like a glass terminal or something.

 

I ordered mine at the dealer and they came just like that (aside from separating the glass from the back-plate). They are standard metal terminal leads hot-glued(?) to the heating element. I will most likely just use some female spade terminals to connect them and heat-shrink wrap as much as possible.

 

Oh ok. Thats easy enough. From the pics i didnt see a metal tab connector. It just looked like a blob of glue. Let me know how it goes and I am looking forward to your writeup and parts list. Thanks
