thats their default answer to most of the steel wheels with tacomas... because they had clearance issues with the second gen tacos on certain 16s, they assume that it applies to every Tacoma...

if you have someone at 4WP that actually drives a tacoma and knows the tacoma, you will likely get a different reply...

gotta remember, most of the crew at 4WP are jeep and domestic truck guys...

Alan, drwb here on TW was told by 4WP that his current wheels would not fit, but he told them to sell them to him anyway... he is running them with no issues...

when i had my 52s, i was told by 4WP that they would not fit, and they refused to sell them to me... so, i went with America's Tire and even custom ordered my backspace...

when i went back to 4WP and showed them that they fit, they were pretty emphatic that whoever sold me the wheels must have put a wheel spacer on them without telling me...

i offered to let them take the wheels off right then and there and see for themselves, but they told me they were too busy with installs...

that's pretty much the last time i ever really shopped there for wheels...

so long as you don't get the Soft8 style wheels, you should be ok...

i recently saw a truck in person where the owner said his wheels were rubbing the caliper... when i took a closer look, it was actually the sidewall rubbing on the stock upper control arm but that was because he somehow got wheels with a 5" or so backspace... it wasn't the actual wheel rubbing on the face of the caliper..

best bet though, is to see if the retailer will let you test fit the wheel... if not, buy one wheel and test fit without a tire on it...

if it doesn't clear for whatever reason, at least you are only out the cost of one wheel which should be relatively reasonable in price...

you can also determine at that point if its worth getting a small spacer...

if it clears, then you can go ahead and make that wheel your spare and go order a full set for the truck...

the series 52s or the D window wheels... some places refer to them as Nascar wheels, are the safest bet of the black steel wheels...

or, if you can drop a little more money, go alloy as i can;t think of any black alloys offhand that would have an issue...

i think you would like that Eagle Alloy Series 100 that im running...

it has a deep offset for an aggressive look, and it's a 3.625" backspace which is just a fraction deeper than the 3.75"

although, it's a 16" wheel so the tires would be a tad bit more expensive...

still a great size wheel for the taco...

the average cost of the Series 100 is around $110 to $125 per wheel...

yes, they should... those are the wheels that drwb is running, and last year, i sold my 16" streetlock version of those wheels to a TTORA member with a 96 4x4 xcab and they fit like a glove...

but, like i said, maybe consider ordering just one and do a test fit... at worst case scenario, you are out $60 but could always slang the wheel on craigslist for most of your money back if 4WP won't take them back... as far as i know, so long as you don't mount a tire on it, they will take a return...

when you order, just tell them you are putting the wheel on a project truck so they don't hassle you about the tacoma fitment issue...

I have a 2002 tacoma and just bought a set of 15" Pro Comp Series 98 "Soft 8's" with 4.5" BS and they fit without any wheel spacer. All the research I did online said they would rub the caliper. So before I bought them from the guy on Craigslist I installed them on the truck to make sure they fit. I torqued all the bolts down, jacked the truck back up and spun the wheel and there was no rubbing. Now they are pretty close to the caliper, but there is absolutely no rubbing what so ever! I wonder if there was a certain tolerance on the caliper machining that makes different calipers have different clearance?

there have been maybe 3 or 4 that didn't have issues...

i have also seen a couple 8 hole wheels that were stamped differently than the traditional Soft8s which are die cut... the stamped whole wheels will clear just right...

that's why it's always worth doing a test fit with one wheel before dropping the money on a full set...

i neeed to find pics, but we tried putting 15" soft8s on my buddy's first gen xcab and the holes hit the brake vein.. he was pretty pissed off that he spent the money and couldn't return them, so he ended up with spacers for a while, but eventually sold them and went with the Wheelers Offroad steels as those holes are stamped differently without the inner lip...

if you go with Wheelers, they are pretty much guaranteed to fit in 15s on a first gen...

that would be the safest bet...

i want to say that Wheelers is a TW vendor, but can't be sure... you can search the vendor section here on TW to find out if they have a forum discount...

Yupp! the series 52 D window wheels fit fine on my truck, but just like Mike said you can always ask to order one wheel to test fit it and have them test fit for you so in case they don't fit the company can send it back and you probably don't have to deal with buying it and returning it yourself...

Before I bought my wheels from 4wheelparts, they said it won't fit...I called the wheel company Procomp and they said it won't fit...so I called Procomp asking them if they can send one wheel (the exact size I wanted) to 4wheelparts since procomp doesn't have a shop to test fit wheel/tires to a specific by 4wheelpart store close by me. The wheel arrived to 4wp's I went to test fit them and fit fine, so I went ahead and ordered all four wheels....all the workers thought it wouldn't fit but obviously they were all wrong

I thought you said that your 52s were 16x8?

The OP (and I ) are only considering 15s.
