Looking to buy a Toyota!

Hello, I've been looking to sell my Colorado and buy a Tacoma for a while now but Have a few questions. I'm debating between the 4.0 and the 2.7, my truck has the 3.5 now and I drive 40xxx+ miles a year. I drive a lot of stop and go city but a lot of highway as well with a lot of hills. Is the fuel mileage that much better in the 2.7? is it worth the mileage to lose that power? (most I ever haul is my dirt bike) i am also wondering about the weight and mileage difference between the 1st gens and 2nd gens. I like how small the 1st gens are but with near the same prices as the 2nd I am debating. Any help is much appreciated ! thanks edit- 4x4 access cab toyota!

Plenty of power in the 4Banger

 

I love the V-6, all the power in the world... but, the I-4 has its fans here... I get average of 16 mpg on California gas around town and some highway. Pure highway is closer to 18 mpg even 19...

If you want 4WD and the traction package (OFF ROAD TRD) then it is only available with the V-6. The base 4WD is available in the I-4... and you can add aftermarket lockers if needed. The base Tacomas all have a limited slip system 'TRAC' in 2WD and 4WD-HI, starting in 2009.

 

I have the first gen(2002) with the 3.4L in a M/T and it has a lot of power (that I wouldn't give up) and I get about 19mpg doing about 50/50 highway/city. I have heard that the 2nd get Taco's are a lot heavier and don't have as much get up and go as the 1st gens do, but I have never driven one so I don't know.

is the 2nd gen much heavier then the first? its hard to find specs on both access/extended cab 4x4. would the 2.7 have a better time in the first gen being smaller? thanks for all the input!

 

I just bought two days ago an '02 Taco 4WD V6. It replaced a '99 XJ Cherokee that I loved, but that I totaled.


I averaged 19 MPG in city driving in Denver ( there was far more traffic than usual there) and I averaged 21 MPG doing 68-76 MPH driving from CO through KS and OK.


What I found the most surprising is how much GO this thing has at speeds above 65 MPH. The XJ was a take off monster, but between the aerodynamics (or lack there off) and the gearing it was a dog above 60 MPH. Not so with the Taco, good take off with plenty of pull at high speeds and VERY good fuel economy.

I had a first and now 2 second gen. Tacomas... the 2nd gen are a bit bigger indeed (wider and a much bigger bed)... Overall a 2nd gen Tacoma is about the same size as the first gen Tundra. I am sure the specs are online at Tacoma.com.
