Picked up a Kenwood TM-281A radio, still have to do the mod to it this week but pretty excited to use it.

According to the dude the 271 was discontinued. Got it from Ham Radio Outlet. Radio, mag mount w/ coax and whip for under $200.

Nice. looks almost the same. Im going to do a permanent mount antenna this month. Tired of the mag one. It works fine but I just want to be able to screw the whip in and be done.

 

Do you keep the cb with that setup? ^

Can someone give me an outline of what sort of radio the guys that do the Mohave run? I am guessing a radio like this but what else is needed to make them work?

Yea

These work just fine. Most run an icom v8000 i think. I love mine though. Also the yaesu's are pretty nice. No need to spend more than $200 on one. And these for $150 are great. Decide whether you want a permanent mount or mag mount.

The icom v8000 they had was like $209 just for the radio. The Yaesu 2900 was nice, 75W output but it's got some gnarly plates to dissipate heat. The 281 is 65W, smaller, and was $10 cheaper.

Grab coax, a whip, and mount like JD said. Also with the Kenwood the r768 resistor needs to be removed.

I think all of the radios need that mod. Its not hard. Just take off a resistor. And I chose the Kenwood because it is their rugid model. It's supposed to be tough. It has a loud front facing speaker. My 271 has a green screen which I liked better than the amber one. And also the screen is behind plastic or whatever. You know how when you touch the lcd screen it distorts and then clears up? Thats what the yaesu does. Does the 281 do that Eddie?

No there is one in Kearney Mesa up the street from me so I popped in there.

 

Do not get the magnet mount....ive had a couple buddies who used the mount and the second they hit a whoop that wasnt soaked by their suspension the magnet flopped off. had to stop a bunch of times during the run.

ive got an ICOMV8000, my buddy used a nail clipper to do the mod. right before he clipped the diode had to blurt "are you sure thats the right one?!" if not there goes $180 LOL

 

I just bought a cheap soldering iron and used a needle. There are pictures that show you which resistor to take off. But yea it would suck to mess up.

 

yeah that buddy with the flopping magnet mount is me and the nail clipper is also me hahahaah and for anyone that wants to do the mod heres the picture of the diode u need remove

 

and yes to everyone that wants to get a race radio and antenna. do not get the magnet mount they are useless unless you go slow then they are ok. but if you plan on running around 40 and up and hitting whoops the magnet are just gonna fall off the roof of the truck. oh yeah if anyone wants the magnet i'll sell it to whoever that wants it $20. its this one http://www.pciraceradios.com/ProductDetail.jsp?LISTID=3739739852770279681
