It's getting cold enough that I really don't want to turn off my truck all the time for running into the convenience store, etc. Also I hate leaving it running in the driveway unlocked, it's like a neon sign advertising a free Tacoma.

However there's a feature that helps keep you from locking your keys in the car by unlocking the driver's door if you leave your keys in the ignition. Is there a way to disable or override that feature?

Honestly, I'd prefer one of those voodoo dances where you open and close the door three times and turn the key on twice and run around the car singing Kum-Bye-Ah until your neighbors think you're doing acid. Because those sort of fixes are reversible. Ya know, because eventually I'll probably lock my keys in the car and decide I'm not going through that again. That's one reason I'm not 100% sure it's a good idea to do this, but I'd like to know if it's possible. :) Thanks for any help!

The door lock feature is to prevent you from locking your keys in. With your door open, even if you hit the lock button on the door or remote it will unlock the doors. This means even if your keys are in your pocket and you try to lock it with the door open it will still unlock. Have you tried starting the truck, closing the doors, and THEN locking it? If this doesn't work then you have something wrong with your truck.

Another option, you could technically override the door open switch and this should do what you want. While overridden though your done light will not come on with the door open.

And the last is remote start. This will allow you to start your truck from within your house, work, etc. This should not unlock your doors and should prevent anyone from driving away with your truck without the keys.

Keep a second key with you. With the truck running, get out and lock the door with the key. Done, doors are locked and truck is running. Kind of a pain but easier than trying to reprogram the truck.

That won't help if you want to run into a store and leave the truck running though will it? Or does that allow you to use the remote start remote to lock the doors with the truck running?

Mine allows me to remove the key, lock the doors and leave the truck running. Or, one can turn off the truck, lock up and restart from outside. Plus, it is soo nice getting in to a running, warm truck in the mornings, especially with the heated seats.

Whoa, I didn't know they'd let you remove the key with the truck still running. That's an interesting feature. I need to invest in one, running out to start the truck in the morning 5 minutes before I leave is getting old really quickly...

It kills my fuel economy in the winter, but it is so worth it.

X2 on the second key! I've done this. Hell, I got 3 when I purchased my truck!

wouldn't one have to manually lock all 4 of the doors?

No! Turn key once to lock single door, turn key twice to lock all 4. On a second Gen anyway.

My dies the same way, not sure what my timer is set to, I think 10 or so minutes. I do recall being told that I could change the timing on it though.

Here in Vegas, I leave mine running at gas station with windows down and doors unlocked. 9 out of 10 people who'd steal my truck, won't know how to release the parking brake, let alone find reverse. (I have a six speed manual) It would be comical more than threatening.

OK, I feel kinda dumb now. Ha! I didn't realize it would stay locked if you lock it with the key. Good to know. Thanks. Getting kinda chilly for all this turning the engine off silliness. (Blah blah, I hear my crazy environmentalist sister babbling about me killing the Earth by running my truck. As my Tacoma sits idling on an oil rig). :p

If you're still interested in disabling this system, I followed this mod. Once you unplug this sensor it can't tell when the key is in the ignition, so it'll never beep at you when the truck is off and it also enables you to lock it with the keys in. It takes about 5 minutes.

The remote won't lock it with the key in the ignition.
