With that mag mount I understand why it would suck.

To those wanting a mag mount buy this one:
    http://www.hamradio.com/detail.cfm?pid=H0-000003

Just buy the radio, this, and an antenna and you're good to go.

I have never had a problem with that mag mount. Granted I do not have long travel and havent really got any big air. But I have romped through the desert pretty hard and it has held up just fine. Would put money on it if I wasn't a broke college student.

The only downside I have experienced with having a mag mount is having to run the cable out the window. It's not really a hassle. I'm just anal and don't want to have to do that. Plus for me, I like the look of the permanent mount.

what were people's main motivation for going long travel?

the only reason i did it was to fill in my fiberglass fenders cause they look cool... lol

    that thread cracked me up.

my buddies and i 3M tape our magnet mounts and they aren't coming off. They hit trees at 30, wack fast food drive thrus. I even have a pretty wild kink in my whip and the magnet mount still holds great.

Both of those threads were hilarious. "I want the truth". Truthful answers. "No, that's not the truth I want to hear".

When you all are modd'ing those radios, is that to access the 150ish mhz frequency range?

    yes

The only problem with modding is that it is technically illegal, also you need a HAM license to operate the radio AND the weatherman frowns upon those who use modded HAM radios (they "bleed" into other race frequencies).

I remember in 07 I was inquiring about modified radios on TTORA i got my ass chewed out by some hardcore HAM guys saying what I was doing is super illegal, basically making me sound like I was about to kill someone. Anyways they had my license# from some pics i posted and were gonna report me to the FCC.

Just dont talk to anyone on the HAM freqs without a call sign cause, like someone said to me "we can triagulate your position"

I look at it like this: I use it for leisure with my buddys out in the desert and to listen in during races, I will only use the HAM freqs in case of emergency to call out for help. A lot of the MDR racers on a budget were using modified HAM radios.
