37% of all traffic fatalities are caused by drunk drivers, so obviously the other 63% are caused by sober people. I say ban sober people from driving, their obviously a much bigger problem than the drunks. Seriously in Ca. you are only allowed to use cell phones with a hands free device/bluetooth etc. And yet ever since passing the law you see more and more people on the phone. Driving to work 2-3 times a week I'm behind someone wandering all over the road, half driving on the shoulder, driving into oncoming traffic or merging into freeway traffic at 35. When you finally pass them, sure as the world their on the phone. I don't care how good you think you are, pick one or the other. Drive or pull over.

But a hands free BT that I almost never have to touch OR look at should not be banned. If you think it should, then you should remove you radio because thats a distraction about as much. You should also never have a passenger because they are a distraction in exactly the same manor.
It's all about holding a handset to your ear that is the problem. Texting is just plain retarded while driving!

I don't really care either way, Nothing except for maybe a family emergency is that important while I'm driving. Family emergency then fuck the law, other than that I'm hands free cause I'm not talking.

I never understood how they crack down on drunk drivers all out yet let people text and drive with a slap on the wrist. I told my wife if there was somebody I wanted to kill I would just hit them with my car after sending a text message. I would just prob get a few months and probation in jail....

Honestly just put speed sensors or use the gps in phones to rate the speed going. Anything over 5mph and the phone automatically locks out texting. How friggin hard is that ? If they make it mandatory for people with dui's to get the 'blowing device' installed on their vehicles than why not impliment something like the above for people if they get a citation for texting and driving ?

Just another piece of ineffective, 'feel-good', legislation that this congress, and admin, is famous for.

They'd have to ban make-up, hamburgers, radios, roadsigns, billboards, and passengers, etc. Ever notice how some drivers have to actually 'look' at their passengers when talking to them?

Again, Just another piece of ineffective, 'feel-good', legislation that this congress, and admin, is famous for.

This might not be said if someone texting or on the phone kills your family.

The problem with making the phone disable while the vehicle is moving is it affects everyone in the car, not just the driver. Riding in a car, a bus, a train or an airplane would result in the phone being disabled. The phone would have no way of knowing if you were driving or not.

Plus, on my phone, I can turn the GPS off with a one-touch widget.

i think its pretty dumb. people just need to stop being complete idiots. if you dont have the mental capacity or driving skill to talk on the phone and drive the same time...then dont. but i know for a 100% fact that i can drive and hold my phone to my ear and have a conversation just fine. in fact i pay MORE attention to driving while im on the phone, when im driving on the phone my attention is a dead 50/50 split, driving and talking. when im NOT on the phone, everything is a distraction. the rattling dash, playing with the radio, talking to a passenger, looking into the other lane at the really cool car driving by, looking at the side of the road at the signs or other people. Just a week ago at night driving home in my 99' that was for sale, i got a call from a guy who wanted to buy the truck, and i negotiated the deal for the truck while i was driving it on the highway and through the city, and i didnt even remotely come close to having any sort of close call or inattentive driving, which does happen every now and then driving normally

If they don't have the mental capacity to do it, do you really think they then should know not to do it?

nope, probably not. but its just like extreme gun regulation...if you limit/regulate/ban guns the only people with guns will be the criminals, if you make driving on the phone illegal, the only people still driving on the phone will the idiots who cause the crashes in the first place
