My buddy has been looking for a truck for his business. We were working at a local Chrysler dealership and saw a 1st gen Tacoma next door at the Toyota dealer. After we finished working we walked next door to take a look. It was an '03 xtra cab V6 w/ 6 spd manual, 4x4 TRD off-road with 74K miles and in pretty good condition. Exactly what my buddy was looking for. Guess how much ! $ 18,000 - we almost fell all over each other in shock. The salesman was an idiot and started talking about how he had a bunch of clients in Central America who would be all over the truck. My buddy made him a fair offer of 10K on the spot as the truck definitely had some cosmetic issues but got nowhere. I don't get some dealerships and their salesman. Here is my buddy willing to take the truck that day for a fair price and everyone knows that they paid someone peanuts as part of a trade-in but they don't want to make the effort to move a vehicle quickly with little or no fuss. Go figure - their loss. Needless to say my buddy won't spend his money at that dealer - ever.

Yeah that is a little crazy priced, according to KBB CLEAN retail (NM area KBB) is 16k your offer of 10k was a low ball, but typically there is about 3-4k mark up in a used tacoma at first, it drops as the truck ages, but there is no way they could have sold it for 10k. I would look up NADA and KBB for your local area and see what trade and retail is then make a realistic offer and see what they say, and ask to talk to the mgr, show him the facts.

    Good luck,
    Colin

PS I agree with you, most salesman are a PIA, but not all. Thats what got me into the car business 13 yrs ago. A POS car salesman lied to me and got me to drive 120 miles to go buy the car I wanted and when I got there they didnt even have the car I wanted! So I vowed that I could do a better job selling cars then anybody else, and treat people right, I have been blessed many times over because I do exactly that.

    Good luck.

Besides the trade-in value you have to consider any money the dealer spent on the truck. Often the dealer will invest in tires, brakes and even body and or paint work. If they changed any belts or hoses they could be into the truck for several thousand over what they gave on trade in.

Absolutely! Shoot I think our avg. recondition cost is over $1000 bucks here! Shop fees of over $100 a hr dont help either! But 18k is still crazy! We smoke some crack on 4x4s here during the winter with the snow and mtns but thats nuts!

Yeah i know 10k was probably low but the truck needed some slight cosmetic work, the tires were good but not new, the bed liner was rough from doing what it's sposed to. They didn't even come back with a counter-offer. My buddy also didn't care for the BS the salesman was coming up with to explain his position and price. My buddy and I both knew that the V6 w/ 6 spd manual is a desirable combo - especially to my friend but 18K was just out of this world. I have seen newer trucks with less miles goin for that type of money and they were TCV.

That's about what I paid for my CPO'd 2006 TRD Sport that is pretty much loaded, with 58k miles on it.

    18k seems a little ridiculous.

You can thank the "Cash for Clunkers" program for most of the physcotic prices that the stealerships think they can achieve.

It is all supply and demand. Once the snow hits, that truck will fly off the lot.

I paid 27k new for my '11 Taco 4x4 access cab 6 cylinder, 6 speed with SNOW on the ground.

Price is high, and just for the record, they didn't make an '03 with a six speed, it was a five speed. 10 grand was probably low, the dealer should have at least made a counter offer. The truck will sit for a while at that price. KBB for that truck in excellent condition, with 100,000 miles on it is $12,100. I think the salesman made a mistake not making a legitimate counter offer.

$14k for my 07 prerunner with (can't remember correctly) ~40k senior citizen miles...I low balled that old man, (sorry) but I got what I wanted....and didn't even visit a dealer...I do agree that some sales people are a POS. Calling a Tacoma a Colorado in a Nissan dealship...but when I got my 07 corolla brand new, that dude hooked me up...I threatened to leave like 15 times...got myself like 5 toyota shirts, 5 hats...5 keychains...5 free oil changes...free gas for 3 months...

Yes but it will have an effect for many, many years. It took alot of potential used cars and car parts out of the market permanently, which in turn marks them up.

As many said priced high but that is how dealerships roll.
Many good 1GEN trucks here or on Craiglist.
The frame replacement has seem to jack up prices especially here in the Northeast.
The whole underside of the truck gets a makeover & are highly desired for no nannies, less electronics, more affordable than say a 30+K 2012 to people on a budget.
I swear the dealer by me was buying them at auction, had a bay dedicated to the frame replacement then flipping on his lot.
    They did not last long....

I agree, but I bet they will be willing to sit on it to make the money they are asking, especially since it only has 74,000 miles. I'll bet there are folks on here with 2010's and 2011's that have that many miles and more.

But I don't think the dealer would have given full trade-in price if there was reconditioning work to do. Maybe normal trade in minus the estimated service needed.

They sure won't let you or me get credit for that. Money spent to keep or restore a vehicle to normal condition does not add premiums to it's value or selling price. Heck they won't even add value to it for aftermarket accessories you may have.

Uuummm yeah, but it has decimated the used car mkt for many years to come. Many driveable reasonably priced vehicles were crushed.

Thus making the used vehicle mkt have less of a supply and more of a demand....driving prices up.

BTW, it was what over 2 years ago that the Financial Banking system destroyed the housing mkt w/sub-prime mortgages and putting idjits in houses that they really couldn't afford.....tried to buy a house lately?:D

I got 3 right now, 1, I live in and 2, I'll hang onto til the mkt turns.

Just an easy example because obviously you missed something.

back to our regularly scheduled thread.......:D

This is why I bought a brand new 2008! I was looking at the used 2005+ and for only a couple thousand more I could have brand new!

If someone turned in their 4x4 tacoma in for cash for clunkers then they deserve to be shot! Tacomas hold their value because its the best damn truck in its class! Period. Everybody knows that, so when people go to trade them in, they want a lot for them, because they know they will be a good truck for years to come, so then dealers recondition them, mark them up and say the same thing.
