Personally I think it begins with the raw product considering China is now producing more steel than the U.S....

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
It's aluminum alloy, not steel. Aluminum oxides just like iron, only the end product is white/grey in color. Just about all metal will oxidize regardless of origin.

^^^ Yes. the tacoma wheels are molded in the USA and Mexico. Its to do with the coatings reacting with the alumimnum. Maybe every 1 out of 1000 will get it. Theres more of a chance of getting a lemon over having corrosion. Just remember it can come back, real solution is to replace the part.

Toyota actually has manufacturing facility here in Delta BC. Its actually down the street from where I work.

This is taken right out of wiki

Canadian Autoparts Toyota, Inc. (CAPTIN), Delta, British Columbia - Aluminium wheels for Canada, US and Japan. Around 1.45 million wheels produced annually.

I don't know about your stats , I personally know 4 Tacoma owners that live in the same small community as me that have all had their alloys replaced at the dealership , and when I had mine replaced at my dealership the service manager told me " We replace a lot of these wheels " .

Im talking about out of warrenty, big pain in the ass to deal with on any brand of trucks. I was saying earlier its really common in Canada and Northern states but overall there isnt many of them. My theory is the primer reacts with the aluminum at a low temperature and peals. Ive seen the same happen when ive coated cabinets during the winter. The lacquer reacts with the stain and first coat at a certain tempertature and flakes/cracks off. This with some contamination can cause big problems.

I don't buy the cold weather/salt excuse. My truck has spent it's entire on road existence in Florida. It's never seen extreme cold nor salt on the road and yet the finish has bubbled on all four wheels.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
The cold weather/salt makes it worse. Root cause: only the front of the wheel is coated/protected (my guess).

That's why the bubbling starts towards the inside and works it's way to the front.

I'm gonna have to say heat from daily use and pitting over time due to lack of care (not drying after washing is one) allowing moisture in and starting the corrosion process, unless these were made with specific grade of aluminum, the resistance levels could vary. The impurities in the aluminum would also have a big part of it as well. just my 0.02

Drying after washing ? It rains every second day here in the winter , and I live 100' from the Pacific Ocean , the fog is 1/2 salt .

Add to that road salt and dirt .

My truck CAN'T be kept clean in the winter , let alone dried after washing

You're in Vancouver , you know the drill

its the clear coat they put on the wheels it's some kind of clear powder coating they put on there and there is obviously some flaw or moisture under it either way try a heat gun and slowly and gently bring the area to a warm temp see if that takes it out.

if not your only recourse is to replace them which is what i would do anyway if it where my truck. i don't think its rust though as the wheels are aluminum alloy someone correct me if i'm wrong.

edit: before people tell me i'm crazy about the moisture under the paint or clear coating it happens all the tme brand new volkswagen's would roll off the car carrier to our shop this way it can happen. i'm not sure if thats what is going on with the wheels or not. on a painted surface such as a hood or fender it usually manifest's itself as an opaque white spot if you zap it with a heat gun for a couple seconds or more it usually clears right up. although once again i'm not saying thats the case with the wheels.

your black powder coating should be fine but, that aluminum ring is suspect seeing as how it has the same clear powder on it there is something wrong with either their supply or the method of applying that clear on there.

I have not had any problems with mine as of yet. It has been a southern truck with it's first owner living in S. Alabama, and I lived in Panama City, FL when I bought it. Either I got a good set or just lucky, who knows. It does seem more common in the northern states, and that salt takes a huge toll on a vehicle over time. I am moving to Delaware in a few months, so we'll see how that works out.

The humitity helps. Its more common in Canada and Northern States but also happens in other places too.

Yep, it always starts on the edge. The back of the wheel isnt coated, good starting place. Same withe the edge of hoods and hatches.

It only happens with a percentage of trucks. I havent had any either and my truck is in Canada. Depends on the finish and if it decides to react. It dosnt happen because of salt and cold but progresses it. I havent seen to many Tacoma's with it. Look at 02-07 Ford Expeditions, colser to 1 in 5 have bubbling on back hatch.
