I'm always amused when young people point to hypocrisy as though it's some major factor.

I have no doubt Al Gore has little internal dialogues in his brain from time to time something along the lines of:

    Voice 1: I'm a hypocrite!
Voice 2: Yes. Also, incredibly wealthy because of it.
    Voice 1: Touche.

Have you noticed, my friend, that politicians say a bunch of shit when campaigning and then do a completely different bunch of shit once in office? It's not about being consistent, it's about getting what you (they) want.

To take another example from the Bush years:

    Inside Dick Cheney's head:

Voice 1: Iraq has nothing to do with 9/11 nor US national security.
Voice 2: Halliburton is fucking RAKING it in and our stock options give Bill Gates a boner.
    Voice 1: Continue bombing.

Canada Formally Quits the Kyoto accord - Once again reminds me of the Jimmy Carter next Ice Age.

Canada will for-mally withdraw from the Kyoto accord on climate change, Environment Minister Peter Kent said Monday.

"The Kyoto Protocol does not represent the path forward for Canada," Kent told a news conference in the foyer of the House of Commons, after his return from an international climatechange summit in Durban, South Africa.

"It's now clear that Kyoto is not the path forward for a global solution to climate change. If anything, it's an impediment."

"We are invoking Canada's legal right to formally withdraw from Kyoto."

The announcement marks the end of years of controversy - as Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Conservative government repeatedly made it clear it would not be tied to the international commitment made by the previous Liberal government.

The Kyoto Protocol was signed in 1997 and ratified by most major countries except the United States. It committed industrialized nations to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions to below 1990 levels and provided financial help to developing countries to accomplish the task.

Although Canada had ratified the accord, it was not on track to meet its targets. Harper's Conservative government has opposed an extension of the Kyoto accord to future international agreements, arguing that other large emitting countries in the developing world, such as China and India, should be required to meet targets.

Kent blamed the former Liberal government for being "incompetent" by signing the accord and failing to meet its targets. As a result, he said, the current Conservative government, which took office in 2006, now faces "radical and irresponsible" choices if it is to avoid the $14 billion in international penalties he said it must pay for failing to meet those targets as a signatory to the accord.

Kent said that to comply with Kyoto, dramatic action would be required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

"To meet the target under 2012 would be the equivalent of either removing every car, truck, ATV, tractor, ambulance, police car and vehicle of every kind from Canadian roads, or closing down the entire farming and agricultural sector and cutting heat to every home, office, hospital, factory and building in Canada." This can't happen, he said, especially since other major nations such as the U.S. aren't covered by Kyoto.

"Domestically, we will do our part to reduce greenhouse gas emissions," said Kent. "Canada, though, cannot do it alone," he said, noting that this country produces just two per cent of global emissions.

But the minister was immediately blasted by opposition critics for abandoning attempts to find a solution to global warming and for using scare tactics.

NDP environment critic Megan Leslie accused Kent of "fearmongering" and of spreading misinformation.

"It was unbelievable and reprehensible, what he was doing," she said.

"It's not enough to be afraid of the criminals in our streets. We now have to be afraid of driving cars and afraid of the international community taking all of our money away."

Leslie said Kent was not telling the truth when he warned of billions of dollars in international penalties.

"They are just trying to hide their failures here by constructing this scary story and then saying hey it wasn't us, it was the Liberals.

That is the whole purpose of the whole global warming thing. Does Mr. 'I invented the Internet' gain from Global Warming? This whole thing is a tax and a way to hopefully change global currency... my opinion anyway! :)

Global Warming Scare is nearly as ridiculous as the Green Jobs concept. I am not against reduction of pollution. I am completely against the politicking of the same.

I don't believe that Canada's withdrawl from Kyoto means that they don't support the idea that there is man made global climate change .

They disagree with the mechanism that would have them ( us ) penalized billions of dollars while developing countries are exempt

Pretty accurate, although I think Michael Crichton also had a good point when he said it's basically the first world telling the third world "We developed and got ours, but you can't have yours".

Which is to say, we continue to need cheap labor from countries with loose human-rights laws in order to:

    - Prop up our Wal-Mart enabled economy and "standard" of living.
    - Prop up our financial sector masters' share prices.

The planet's climate has always been changing. In the past 30 years or so, a portion of our population has figured out how to monetize that concept essentially through clever marketing.

But then, that's how they sold the nuclear arms race and continue to sell the war on terrorism.

Be afraid! And fund us because you are afraid! We will protect you and vanquish this threat, then move along to your next bogeyman, which is scheduled immediately.

Doug Stanhope has defined this concept better than I ever could:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Oww4Ap3YZA

Well, who's to say what's pollution? You can wrangle just about any molecule into something useful via chemistry, yes?

Alternative energy and less fossil fuels is an interesting approach to get us away from sucking on the middle eastern oil teat, which could be good for this country in a number of ways. But it's just stupid to expect the developed world to drop fossil fuels overnight as all these eco-wackjobs seem to think we should. Oil is still the only remotely cost-effective energy source that can fuel our current world economic system. If someone tries to take it away or restrict it, we'll goddamn bomb the shit out of them.

I don't know if I agree that there is no man made global warming / climate change , the concept doesn't seem that far fetched .

I would agree however , that governments / bureaucrats and taking full advantage of the phenomenon to shape another layer of international tariffs and trade .

the entire world population can fit into an area the size of Nevada. You think that humans can actually influence the climate of a planet? One that constantly farts Methane, Co2, and other "Green House" gasses? 1 volcano eruption (small one at that) emits more shit into the air than the human race has colectively in 100 years, or longer.

Yes , I believe it is possible when you consider that if you take a globe ( the ones from school , not the earth ) and lay a piece of paper on it , that is the thickness of our atmosphere .

if your referring to climate change then yes i believe that it is a real problem and eventually we will pass the tipping point for the amount of shit we can pump into our atmosphere. you realize that the majority of serious climate scientist believe this to be true as well. it seems only the uneducated make these accusations of it being false and throw a monkey wrench into the change we could be making.

in regards to any other topic tell me when does an unqualified persons "opinion" override or discredit a specialized scientist's who has his doctorate in the field in question? there are many tell tale signs that the climate is warming and a direct correlation between the emissions of these green house gasses and the issue at hand climate change.

i'm by no means a tree hugger but, the evidence is compelling enough and endorsed by enough people with their phd's for me to at least stop and actually listen to what they have to say. as opposed to reading an article written by who the fuck cares and spreading more nonsense about the subject.

agree with it or not is i guess its your own business but, when our children or our childrens children have to face the consequences of climate change i don't want to be remembered as the asshole with the biggest carbon footprint in my state just because some conservative tells me its not true.

imo i believe there is a natural cycle of warming and cooling and sometimes a major reset occurs ie an ice age. i don't want to be misunderstood and have you thinking i believe we are the total cause of it but, we sure are speeding it along thats for sure.

Nope. The atmosphere is pretty thick. Upwards of 300 miles, or more as it just kida disapears. So unless that paper is 1'8" thick or more, depending on the size of the globe you are using, then that comparison is not accurate.

The Kármán line, at 100 km (62 mi), also is often regarded as the boundary between atmosphere and outer space.

What about the Ionosphere and the Exosphere? Are those not considered the atmosphere?
