31's on an '07?

Apologies in advance if this has been asked and answered a number of times....I've searched and read but can't seem to find my answer.

I've decided to swap out my factory 265/65/17 Bridgestone Dueler H/T's.I'd like something with better traction and a beefier look.Today I went to my local tire shop and talked to them about the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armour's in 265/70/17.He instructed me to talk to Toyota beforehand to make sure that there wouldn't be any issues as far as the ABS system,speedo or any other concerns.The guy at Toyota(parts) admitted he wasn't sure but thought that you could go up 3% without issue.....Now the stocks are 30.6" and the new ones are 31.7" a difference of 3.5%....Again,at this point I don't have any lift planned,just an inch taller.On another note,I thought that the middle number in a tire size designation was the % of the tire width.Would these two sizes not indicate a 5% difference?........

Then there's always the very good chance that my math is off or I don't have any idea what I'm talking about.If anyone can make sense of this mess I'd sure appreciate it....Thanks and sorry again for the noob questions.

 

The center # is a percentage. It's the ratio of sidewall height to tread width. So, even though it shows a 5% difference in the #'s, it isn't a 5% difference in tire height. The difference in tire height is what will throw off your speedometer and odometer.

Thanks for the replies guys,they were all helpful....So we've determined that the extra inch of overall height will make the speedo read 2 mph slow at 60 mph,that I can certainly live with.My only real concern would be causing ABS or computer problems.

 

yes, that is correct. If you follow your fuel mileage, that will be off too.

 

Same here, but I don't plan on changing tire sizes again. A one time calibration would be good for me.....if it is considerably cheaper.

 

Hey squad, Google tires, on one of the pages there is a tire calculator, imput the current size then imput the new size and it will figure how off you will be. You can actually fiddle around with it and get them pretty close. hope this helps.

 

I've thought of doing that also, but in reality, it probably won't ever happen. Or, by the time it does, this will be a trail truck and I'll have a new on road truck.

 

Squad, I went in and had my tires swapped out for 265/70/17's almost right away. I got the BFG All Terrains. They fit fine, at first there was some VERY minor rubbing, no damage or anything, and even then only when I pinned the steering one way or another. The rubbing went away after a month or so as the tires wore slightly. What can have a lot to do with rub is the tread pattern as well. Sometimes the best thing to do is just put the tires on and turn the wheels to see what happens.
