Chip in key question

I spoke with the parts guy at Toyota and he told me that if I had a replacement key with the chip in it and placed it under my dash, I could use a non chip key to start the truck. Then I spoke with service to set up a time to come in and they said " they didn't think that would work'. I am trying to avoid paying $48 for each new replacement key. Thanks!

 

Don't quote me on this but I believe some cheaper remote start systems use this as their way to trick the security system into thinking there's a chipped key in the ignition. If the chip is close to the ignition, I believe that it will work. Try it out, hold your chipped key next to the ignition and use a regular, unchipped key to try and start it.

 

I believe I tried this, and it didnt work.

It's funny, because I saw one post that said you cannot use the valet key to start the truck, but I left my keys at a friends house and I have used the valet on several occasions to run the truck. Just curious if there was another option. Thanks for feedback guys!

 

Whats the point of a valet key if it cant be used to drive the truck!? That doesnt make sense, now does it .. The point of a valet key is two fold. It usually cannot access the glove box (if your car or truck has a locking glove box) and it cannot be used to duplicate the code on the key. This is why when you want to make a copy of a chipped key, you cannot use the valet.

I never understood the purpose of a valet key. I can't imagine letting a complete stranger drive my truck becuase I was too lazy to park it myself. The chipped key near the ignition trick does work for me by the way

 

That. Thats is why people are fat asses. Dont want to walk a few extra steps.

 

Sort of .. Some places have small lots and ONLY let you valet your car. This way the restaurant (or whatever place) has zero responsibility for the cars and what happens outside. They also can double park cars, which allows more cars in the lot. They hire the valet company, who have their own insurance, and its 1 less thing for the restaurant to worry about.

 

^^This. The hospital in Boston also has valet and it's a lot cheaper to pull up in front of the hospital and have them park your truck in their lot vs. the public parking lot. That's the only time my truck has ever been valet parked.

I never realized the other features of the valet key though, thanks for the explanation!
