I used to have 2004 2.5L Sentra... VERY common problem with the 02-06 2.5L Nissan engine is the pre-cat comming apart, getting sucked into the engine, scoring cylinder walls and resulting in excessive oil consumption... Those engines are also known for the screws on the secondary intake valves coming apart and going into the engine, destroying it in the process... Ya small screw bouncing around in the combustion chamber is no good...lol

I am new to Toyota, I have two of them 2.7L 08 Taco with 31k miles and 2.4L 07 Camry with 89k miles. The Camry consumes about 1quart every 5k miles, which is in my mind normal... I know a LOT about engines and I am experienced mechanic... 1quart every 5k miles is nothing to worry about... Once you have white smoke coming out of the exhaust when the engine is warmed up or oil in coolant now there is something to worry about...

In my professional opinion any engine which consumes with NO leaks present more than 1quart every 1-2k miles should be rebuild or replaced. Of course there is the cheap way of just adding oil to it... Hell if its running fine, doesn't foul plugs, passes emissions and just burns through some oil, its fine in my opinion.

Just went through this with the wife's 52000 mile RAV 4 at interval of 5000 miles and down 2 qts. I guess a little over a quart every 2500 miles is not that bad now that I read this thread. Toyota told me they would not even look at the truck unless it was using a Qt every 500 miles..... And upon further investigation, ALL Manufacturers have this caveat. In my case I am going from 5w Synth to 10w High Mileage dino and changing every 3K ...

Going to do the same with the Taco even though it seems ok. Synthetic oil is great for engines that don't use oil in 5K. But if one is going to do 3K oil changes may as well save some money and use dino.

Replace the PVC valve and check the vent hose from your valve cover that goes to your air intake for obstruction.

I am never "okay" with any oil burning other than evaporation. Oil stem seals that leak should be replaced. Same with rings. I had bad stem seals on my 86 Mercedes and it was using a quart a week! I opened it up and the cylinders were full of gunk. That damn car is bulletproof.

Make them fix it. That's ridiculous.

GM trucks are notorious for burning oil. However, even their oil consumption specs are 1 qt per 2,000 miles. And it's completely normal to burn this amount because of the huge gap between pistons and cylinder wall to allow for heat expansion. In a Toyota this isn't the case. The rings are pretty tight to the block so little oil should seep through.

The guy that build mt MR2 motor was a mechanical engineer and I was told 1QT/600 miles was fine.

It's crap just I feel sometimes people/companies/dealerships think about the immediate buck rather than retaining a long term happy customer.

I have been doing business here locally with a guy at the Toyota dealerships, he's moved dealerships and I move my business to stay with him. Sure there's been a few bumps but the $1,000's I've spent with him more than makes up for it.

Luckily it seems the OP found the right guy to talk to and it's starting to be resolved (I didn't read ALL the pages though).

Customer service, good customer service is becoming more and more rare these days. Just blows my mind.

Try something other than M1 and since you live in Florida you could use 10W30 or even 15W40.Thicker oil may help.I had a Ford company truck and used 15W40 for nearly 100,000 miles and it used no oil between changes and I drove it very hard. The company demanded we use 10W30 so that is what I started using and it started using a quart every 2,500 miles.Same brand oil just different weight.I also had a Ford tempo once that I could not use synthetic in.Used four quarts in 3,000 miles and none with non synthetic Valvoline 10W30.I tried different brands and that is the only oil that would not go through it fast. The manual say if you live in a hot climate or the truck is worked hard a heavier oil is permissable.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

    Damn man, that sucks!

Seems like with that much oil being burned on a newer engine it would have to be one cylinder with a cracked ring or something.

Mine has 58K on it, the timing cover is wet on the right side of the engine. It's out of warranty by time, but I could probably argue for some help from Toyota. But after reading what you went through, I'm going to wait till it's dripping. Don't want them messing with it. Just changed the oil after 3K and 6 months runtime. No noticeable drop in oil level on the dipstick.

I bet if Toyota pulled the plugs out of it there would be one covered in massive amounts of oil deposits. They won't try to rebuild it, you'll wind up with a new engine.

So, is a five year old truck with 50K on it and a new engine worth more private party than you will get on trade in? If it were me I'd be tempted to let them fix it and see how it goes. If it goes bad you can still trade it in. If it goes good you might be able to sell it privately and get some more of your money out of it. Though I understand not trusting it again.

    Good luck.

I'm sure this has been suggested already (not reading all this) but did you try a heavier oil. Something like a 30 or 40 weight. My old honda has 280,000 miles on it and just recently started to burn a little oil (.5 qt per 3000) and I upped it to 10w-30 from 5w-20 and it burns less now.

wow that is excessive oil consumption imo. my taco just recently started to burn oil at 170k. I have a gsr that burns oil but its understandable because it is redlined to 8k daily.

you should maybe check all your lines or possibly even rings and seals.

Just trade it and get a new truck dude, Honestly if a toyota is giving you that much of a problem, Its a one off toyota. My family has owned nothing but Toyota and never had any sort of Oil leak, Or any leak for that matter. We had a 2001 4runner that gave us 320,000 miles before we SOLD IT. Bottom line is if your toyota is having that much of an issue, It should be considered a fluke and properly disposed of and never spoken of again.

OK did they ever tested compression? That would tell you if you are loosing oil oil through there and where exacly you are loosing it.
Somebody sugested PCV valve that things tends to get stuck open and you loose oil that way. Our engines suck oil through vent hose on the back Cylinder#6 I believe. You can try putting oil catch can there to see if you getting massive oil there.

is your '07 still in warranty? surely Toyota can't be sayin' 400 mi per qt. is OK; it has to defect under warranty.
