How does loctite work?

Ive used the stuff for years but never thought about how a liquid could hold two pieces of metal together permanently!

 

From their website: "Threadlockers are a single component anaerobic adhesive comprised of unique liquid resins that harden (or cure) to a durable solid when exposed to metal ions in the absence of air. The anaerobic cure mechanism allows the adhesive to flow and evenly settle to lock and seal threaded fasteners without curing permanently. Any excess threadlocker will remain liquid, and is easily wiped away from the assembly."

I wish it wasn't so expensive. But it is great stuff. Used to use it all the time at the bicycle manufacturing place I worked for. We used green and red. Green was hard as hell to undo if you ever had to. Made red look like a walk in the park.

 

Never even seen or heard of green. I've always used blue for light duty or red if I didn't want it to come out again. I've had to use a torch to release a bolt with threadlocker red on it before, that green stuff sounds like it's 1 step below putting JB Weld on the threads.

It took a heat gun and many many rounded off allen keys to get those parts out. The thread locker never really let go, it just allowed you to start forcing the parts out. Haha.

 

Green? Crazy. I thought red was the ultimate.

 

I use green on injector cups in diesels. A pita to remove.

 

Green = furniture to the ceiling

There was green locktite on my Drive shaft bolts when I took it apart to do the U-joints....almost blew out a nut getting them loose
