What to look for when buying a Tacoma?

    Hi everyone! Noob here trying to buy a Tacoma, looking for a reliable truck that I can have at college for up here in Alaska. What should I specifically look for that is a common problem? Engine recommendations? I like manual trannys but are the autos and manuals both good? I understand the head gasket issue was solved after 1995 so I am looking at 1996 and up.

    Any help appreciated or links to if this was brought up before. :)

    Make sure it's 4x4, 4 door, extended cab, or regular cab.

    Isn't that just like saying a 4x4 because the 4 door, ext. cab or regular cab are all the cab options?

    The way I read that is he's suggesting to just get a 4x4 regardless of what cab you choose

    Intake, exhaust, lift. Typical stuff.
    Make sure the previous owner got the frame insured. If not, dont buy.

    make sure its a 1st gen 01-04, extra cab, low miles, and doesn't have much rust on the frame.

    Like others said check for frame rust. Other than that you can't really go wrong. Just note that all of the double cabs have an auto tranny

    Check for leaks behind backing plate, axle seals up front, front and rear diff, transfer case and transmission, along drive shaft, rack and pinion/steering box. If you see grease or oil inspect closely.

    Look for any signs of n * g g e r rigging or backyard mechanic work.

    Welcome...Check the frame for rust... mainly 1st gen. But second gens depending where your at rust from the salt too.
