    Hey guys,

Well, in March of the new year, my gf and I will be making the big step of buying a home. I wanted to get input from you guys that have houses and especially pools. We have our price range, finances figured out, basic options decided on, but a pool is a struggling point. So, any of you who have or have had a pool.. is it worth it? Do the costs of upkeep on a pool outweigh the pros and use? We do have a fairly long pool season here in Az, but with that long season, comes high electric bills and pool upkeep.

We are looking at both houses with and without pools. The ones wthout will probably be cheaper month to month wise due to the fact of no upkeep of a pool. So, is a pool really worth it?

Edit: also, the kitchen is the main selling point for us. My gf is an awesome cook. Lol. So, we would much rather have a nice kitchen (granite, track lighting, glasstop stove, etc) then a pool. So we would pay more for a house without a Pool to get those features.. OR.. we could have a decent kitchen with a pool. Thoughts on that dilemma are welcome as well. Lol

Any thoughts or opinions are welcome..

    Thanks guys.

My first house had a pool and spa. Lots of fun but was about 180$ a month to have someone maintain it for me. I later fired that guy, did it myself, and hated how much work it could turn into.

I also had a neighbor who had a tree that dropped about 4,000,000 leaves an hour into my pool so that didn't help.

My current house, no pool just a spa.. If i want to swim, I go to someone else's house.

I would sit back and think about how much time you will spend in the pool and go from there, but expect to spend well over 100$ a month for it..

Ok cool, that's what I was wondering.. what the average cost to run a pool was. At all our apts we usually spend a lot of time at the pool. Even some of the other members here know that. Lol we bring music, bbq, beer pong tables, etc.. if we arent at the pool, we are at the salt river (which we will have access to regardless) point is.. we love the water and being outside outting on get togethers. Just don't know If I can justify the extra 100-200 bucks a month for one.

Pools are a sticky situation for sure. I grew up in the phx/scts area and have had both homes, with and without a pool. Yes they are pricey, but if you use it as much as you say, it is probably worth it. In the same breath, we don't have a pool now, here in Tucson, and we hate not having one. The next place we buy, will have a pool. Depending on where you end up, I have a great pool guy that is cheap and does a great job, and includes all the chemicals and everything.
Because there are sooooo many nice houses on the market right now, you should be able to find something with a nice kitchen as well a pool, if thats what you decide

Do you have a realtor? If not, my mom has been selling homes in the phx area for over 30 years and is very good at finding exactly what you want. PM me if you would like her information.

Thanks man. So far we have found one.. maybe two that have both the kitchen and pool covered. the rest are either one or the other. My buddy is actually a realtor and has already set me up with listings that fit my criteria. Appreciate it tho man. My gf doesn't care If we have a pool and would prefer a nice kitchen over one. She said if it makes me happy, then we can get a pool. Lol. I just dont want to be stuck with and not use It. Idk. Damn! Haha. Keep the input comin guys. Even out of state peeps.

If your going to use it a lot go for it. I use my spa all the freaking time, but never go swimming during the summer.. I use my spa in the summer a lot as well.

If you do buy one with a pool, make sure to look over that pool very closely to make sure its not cracking anywhere major and what not.. A friend got a house with a pool, about a year later had to have the entire thing redone because cracks started showing up, then they got bigger, then it was a huge ordeal.

No problem! Just want to make sure you get taken care of.
I would go for the pool! Just make sure there aren't a bunch of huge tree's around that will clog your system all the time!

If we can find one that both a pool and nice kitchen. Then I'm totally in. If not, the kitchen takes first. Lol

Are you looking to move right away? Is there a timeframe where you must move? (apt lease ending)
I just know there are new homes going on the market all the time. One mistake we made was we "jumped" into a house within a week of looking, and missed a great house that came onto the market a month after we closed.
I guess what im trying to say, is don't settle for something that your not "in love" with. Especially if you are planning on staying there for a while.

Hey, I have a house with a pool and a new kitchen we are selling. The MLS is 4685771. I think a pool is totally worth it. The pool we have was put in 2 years ago. I think the cost is about 25 bucks a month. I buy a 100 dollar tub of chlorine one time a year and clean it myself. The kitchen was put in 3 years ago. :D

It all comes down to what you want in the house. I have a pool. Do I like it? yes. If I moved tomorrow would I get another house with a pool? eh, maybe, maybe not. For me it's more of a nice to have, but not a requirement.

As far as costs go, over the past 5 years we've lived here and with the help of leslies I'm pretty handy taking care of all the pool stuff, keeping the chems balanced, cleaning the filter, draining/refilling. But yeah, i'd estimate like 75-100 /month average on electricity/chemicals/repairs/water to keep it filled (that's assuming you do all the maintance yourself)

if you use a pool enough...they are worth the cost. If you do get one with a pool....make sure it is safe for kids of course..fencing...gates...

But what I would really look for...since it sounds like the kitchen will be heavily used...a neighborhood that has southwest gas to it....so much better for cooking and cheaper than srp or aps...

Pools are a pain in the ass IMO. I had a house with one a long time ago and loved having it. But it was a lot of work and a lot of money on upkeep. Used it all the time at first but then as time went on I used it less and less. If you are willing to spend the $ to keep it up then do it. I don't have a pool currently. One of my best friends does and I just go over to his house with the kids when we want to go swimming. (I'm a pool mooch :) )

My house now doesn't have one but my dad's old house did. I don't know the numbers... but maintenance was pathetically easy on it. It all depends on your setup. He had a DE filter on it that was for a pool 2-2.5x the size it was. Add that with an auto cleaner, auto fill... the thing practically took care of itself. We checked the chem once every two weeks or so and add as needed... took all of like 2min top. After monsoon storms a few minutes you could get most of the leaves up, or just let the filter grab it and empty it a few times.

I'm going to be looking for a new house myself in the near-ish future... and while I'd like a pool I'm going to opt out for now (but won't turn one way lol). One thing to consider... if you're willing to negotiate you can get a damn nice brand new custom pool built for pennies on the dollar from just five years ago... that gets you a newer pool with a warranty and years of trouble free use. Something to consider.

gf, not wife...hm, what happens if you break up? lol, seriously though, paying for a home that will some day be yours is the best decision you two can make. I've never been a fan of apts or houses for rent..I don't have a pool, so I can't help you there...
