supercharged automatic vs N/A manual?

Anyone done a direct comparison between the two? Or seen any numbers/races etc? I'm talking about the 3.4 either in prerunner or 4x4 trim.

The reason I ask is because I happened to watch a video with a supercharged automatic 1st gen, and the truck didn't seem any faster than my stock 5 speed 1st gen. It's really hard for me to tell though, as when I'm accelerating in my truck I rarely really look at the speedometer.

 

It's really hard to tell if that was just a bad joke or if you're serious.

 

How can a n/a vs forced on the same motor possibly be faster?

usually things are much faster then they appear in vids.

there is no way that a SC taco is slower then your un SCed one. Period.

I know it may sound out there but I can atleast see what the OP is implying. For an example....


I own 2 2000 4runners, both 3.4's. One is an auto trans and one is a 5spd.

My 5spd will flat out kill the auto in acceleration period... Obviously a supercharger makes the truck faster, but does it make an auto trans truck faster in acceleration than a manual, possibly but then again possibly not because it already has such a deficit to make up.

 

Finally someone with brain function! It's such a simple concept I had no idea the average user on tacoma world isn't able to comprehend it. The 5 speed is much faster to start with, and the supercharger only adds quite a small amount of power as far as forced induction goes. It's not that crazy to think that the supercharger is just enough to play catch up with the 5 speed, or maybe be a little bit faster.

To the people with critical thinking issues, that's the whole point of this thread, I had an idea and am trying to substantiate it with EVIDENCE! Which is why I was asking for any numbers or if someone has direct experience comparing the two. Holy shit people on here can be dumb!

 

Well I wouldn't say the supercharger only adds a small amount of power, they are actually pretty amazing however the auto does have a bit of catch up before it reaches the manual trans. I wouldn't believe it made such a huge difference except for the fact that I actually own two identical 4runners with the exception of the transmissions.

 

I can see what the OP is saying. I have watched the same videos and Im glad that I didnt buy an auto judging by videos. Time doesnt lie. Count the seconds from 0-60 and its just plain slow on a stock auto. Now a supercharged auto still seems way to slow. As far as I know my truck is 100% stock expect for the deckplate mod and a muffler. But my truck has a ton of power. Maybe its my 4:10 gears, Idk. But when you can spin 1st, 2nd and alil bit in 3rd, and I dont mean chirping through the gears, no, I mean spining, to me thats saying something for a V6 4WD lifted truck on 33x12.5 and 15x8 steelies. I just wish I knew 0-60 time. But I dont "race" my truck, thats just from being stupid back in the day, and havin a lil fun every now and then. JMO. It just seems like the auto has a big power loss.

 

Call it what you want. Idc because I know what my truck can do and I dont lie. Im still shocked to this day by it. If I can get a vid up on a closed course, I will.

 

My truck was able to do this with all of the 3 sets of tires I have had. Maybe its just horrible traction issues. But It CAN do it.

 

There's no way you're spinning the tires through 3rd gear on the 3.4 manual, especially with 33s. I have the same 4.10 gears as you and 33s on my 5 speed and I cannot do that.

 

This is step by step on how I do it. I cant dump the clutch, all it will do is spin even worse. I take off like normal untill Im in the power band, then WOT after that, no wet roads, to dangerous for me after having past experience with that. And I know what you mean. I have rode in plenty of fast cars when I use to be in a car club. I know what fast is. Im not saying my truck is fast, but it is powerful enough to spin into 3rd gear. And seems alot quicker then a auto.

 

Well next time I go out to my friends place with a huge ass drive way and someone else in the passenger, Ill take a vid for everyone to see. Maybe its just how I drive, and IMO and many others, thats very good. So Im doing nothing out of the blue.

No clutch slipping. My truck kicked out sideways a lil the other day in 1st gear. And you can hear the tires spining from the outside. It doesnt rev up and stay still. It revs up and spins then goes.
