Dood, that thing would dismantle a Taco offroad unless the Taco was heavily modded.

looks awesome but, its really still a jeep lol.

i think that cancels some of its coolness right out.

it will still most likely be a horribly unreliable hunk of crap with a hefty sticker price.

as a former jeep owner (05 rubicon unlimited, among others), i will tell you that almost no jeep owner would ever consider a tacoma as a "competitor," even looking at the overpriced brute conversion or jk-8.

jeeps - and i'm talking only wranglers here - are really purpose built offroad vehicles that have been modified over the years to become more on road and user friendly. we all know where jeeps started out - as wartime vehicles designed to traverse the worst terrain imaginable. while i used mine as a daily driver, it was tedious to me to drive it on the road, but i put up with it because of the offroad prowess, which is and always will be a jeep's forte. accordingly people who buy jeeps and never take them offroad are true poseurs, in my opinion.

sure you can throw a bed on the jeep to make it a little bit more useful (after all, jeeps are not known for their ability to carry or haul gear or other things), but that doesn't mean it actually becomes a decent "pick up truck." the jeep comes factory with solid axles, and on some versions, factory lockers front and rear, 32 inch tires, electronic swaybar disconnects, etc. and now a pretty nice pentastar v6 with decent hp and low end torque. but it's still a compromised on road vehicle that only does its best when taken offroad. my jeep could not hold a candle to a tacoma on road. night and day difference.

the tacoma, i would have to say, is a purpose built vehicle as well. but it is not purpose built to go offroad. can it? of course it can and it is pretty capable right out of the box, and even more so with some mods that you see people on this site make every day. but i would argue that is not it's stated purpose like a jeep. the tacoma hauls, tows and does most of what it does best on road. it's ten times (maybe 100) better than the jeep in that regard. but that just proves the two vehicles are completely different. each can do some of what the other can, but comparing the two seems just a little bit silly to me. that's my .02 and it's just "my" opinion.

by the way, when i traded in my jeep for my tacoma this year, i had 55K on the jeep and not one reliability issue the 6 years i owned it, except for regular maintenance. jeep builds good vehicles.

With minor cutting of the plastic fenders you can put 35's on those things stock and go anywhere:eek: I would buy a single cab version.

i have worked in the car business for years and i know jeeps are capable off road in that aspect they are great i'm not comparing the two at all in that aspect. but my tacoma could follow a jeep in most every situation. i think it would take some sketchy stuff for me not be able to follow that thing.

also speaking from experience my buddy has a major hard on for jeeps and he constantly has issues with his. i'm sorry but i don't buy american automobiles for one reason only they simply cannot and have not been able to touch the japanese in terms of reliability.

my tacoma may in fact have a squeaky climate fan but, i'm positive that it will out last almost any domestic truck thats offered. this maybe just me and my opinion but, that was one of the driving forces behind me purchasing a toyota.

i didn't think that made me a fan boy of anything just aware of the differences between the two manufactures and their track records when it comes to reliability and over all quality.

The 2003 Wrangler has had axles seals replaced, ball joints, tie rods, axle joints, driveshaft joints, and a radiator and jeep has 111,000 miles. It definitely isn't junk and I never said Jeeps were junk but I dont like the way it drives on the street compared to any of the Tacomas I have owned. Tacoma's are better all around in my opinion. The Jeep is better for rocks and tight spots. That is about the only advantage.

Yeah, they are marginal on the road, but frankly that is to be expected.

Do you wheel a lot? Sounds like your Jeeps undercarriage was taking a beating, but no offense some of the stuff you described could have been avoided with some preventive maintenance. On my first XJ I got 155K miles on the factory rad, but I religiously flushed that coolant every 24 months. I also lubed the diff's at least once a year, if not more often due to wheeling thru rivers and crap.

If only I had some idea of what a grease gun was and knew that flushing a radiator would stop the notorious leaky plastic topped radiators jeep uses I would have saved a lot of money.
