I would go for a Samurai. I just found a stock one that "runs great" and is painted camo for $2250 on auto trader. That would leave you with plenty to do some mods and buy a trailer.

If I was gonna get a trail Rig, this would be the order in which I looked.

    1. Jeep YJ
    2. Older Landcruiser (probably a 100 series, though I would love to restore an FJ40)
    3. 4Runner
    4. Tacoma or just pickup
    5. Cheerokee

Why would I ever want a Heep, for an off-road rig? lol. I choose a 82' Hilux Toyota, or Uni-Mog.

I have one of those "older Toyota's that looks like a Jeep"... check out my gallery for more pics of mine. For a $5,000 budget you wont get much FJ40 though. I would go with and 85 Toyota pickup or 4runner... last year of the Solid Front Axle, first year of EFI... therefore IMO, the best budget build up.

Nice looking 40... my next 40 project will be a little more mild mannered and be stricktly a fully restored road /show vehicle. Believe it or not, before mine was a rock monster it was restored road vehicle/dailey driver... and I miss being able to drive it on the road.

I had a 1969 scout with inline 6 and 3 spd... dana 44 front and rear with trac locks... very capable.. but you will either have to get a rust bucket and dump money into it or spend more than your looking for into a rig you would cry when you slid against a tree... I have also had early toys (1979 and 1981) and they are about the same... either rusted out or show queens that should never be taken offroad... samurais are light, cheap, easy to work on, solid axle leaf sprung so easy to modify and there are usually tons of them around... you could get a really nice one for about $3000 on ebay from time to time that already has some basic bolt ons

I know a guy a with a Sami.....he's nuts. He'll go tearing ass blind through the woods, bouncing that thing off of trees, choking it out under water.....pure craziness. Not to mention, 31" tires on a zuki look huge. An old 4Runner can fit 33" tires without a lift if they're not too wide. In your location, it's gonna be tough to find an old yota or zuki that doesn't have serious rust issues.
