Locking Differential question

Does the locking differential "lock" in 4wd high?

 

No. RTFM!

 

It will only lock in 4wd low. There is a mod though where it can be turned on anytime. Look in the cheap mods section. I think it's in there.

 

i am looking to do the locker mod tomorrow. does it idk hurt anything by doing so.. i'd only use it in 4hi other then 4lo...

 

Remember, you do have TRAC in H4 (limited slip on all 4 tires)... are you sure you need the locker in H4?

In L4, you have A-TRAC whick gives 'near' locker-like traction on ALL 4 tires, not just the rear. It is amazing! I have had 2 other Tacomas with the rear locker, and the A-TRAC out-performs what they could do... just fyi.

 

I don't see any information on his truck...how do you know he's not driving a 2004 OR Prerunner?

 

I see it fine, he has a 2012 Off Road... and from his post, it's a 4WD.

To the OP: The locker in these model trucks only operates in 4Lo from factory. There is some custom wiring that can be done to allow locker operation at any time. I believe someone linked it earlier.

 

Sorry guys, truck I am looking at to purchase is a 2012 TRD V6 auto. Doubt it will ever see off road but since our streets are pretty much solid ice or snow (live in Alaska) from Nov til the first of April was wondering how the truck would perform on the streets in 4H if the rear end didnt lock up.

 

Generally speaking, a locker on ice is a *bad* idea.

 

4wd is enough for snowy street driving

There are certain situations where they can be helpful, but try to avoid their use if other traffic is around.
