Water Pump

I am going to replace the timing belts and the other drive belts on my truck. I figured while I am at it replace the water pump as well. My question is should I go with an oem from my local dealership for 137 or go to advance auto parts and get a water pump for 95 with a lifetime warranty? Both come with gaskets. I am replacing all belts with oem for 104. just a few dollars difference between dealership and advance so they are getting oem.

 

thats what i was thinking and i would be doing the work my brother has his own mechanic shop

 

think i will get the lifetime warranty and cheaper.

 

i can also order the water pump online and pick it up in store and use a code to get 20 bucks off so 75 bucks for a new pump not remanned

 

i would do oem man... thats what mine gets....

It's an awful lot of work to replace that pump if it does not last till the next belt change interval. I'd go OEM. Lifetime means nothing to me if I have to take the bus to the parts store to get it warrantied.

That warranty isn't going to cover collateral damage either. I had a friend who had a lifetime warranty water pump come apart and go through his timing cover on a 22R. Water in the oil, the whole nine yards. He was in Tahoe with his girlfriend when it happened.

I got a NAPA pump, no lifetime waranty as far as I know. Going strong after 25k miles.

Also got a GATES belt at NAPA. I re used the idlers though, I'll replace those when I do the belt again at 240k.

 

They come with gaskets?

My 96 3.4L water pump didn't have a pre-formed gasket. You had to use gasket material in a tube (RTV).

I'd go with OEM and make sure you get the right 'gasket' material for it.

 

Yeah I had to use RTV. I don't recall the type but the FSM will tell you. Make sure you get the right stuff.

That is so much nicer. I hate using RTV, I always feel like Im not using the right amount

You have to use way less than you would think.

 

yeah forsure... i just resealed an oil pan on a customer's 3.4 the other day... that was a messy job

 

alright debate decided oem it is and from what i could understand from the dealership i called it comes with a gasket. we will find out on monday or tuesday as im going to go get the parts. they have all the belts and waterpump in stock. i just decided i do not want to have any problems and am doing maintence use the best parts possible.

 

exactly... the w/p comes with a new t-stat gasket as well. pickup a new t-stat at the same time

when is the timing chain supposed to be changed in the 96 2.7l (123k) also if the previous owner didnt change the pump should i get in that soon?

 

no idea about when the chain needs changing my pump is intact and working fine but im changing it anyway just so i do not have issues. my dads water pump has 296000 plus miles on it and still going strong on his 3.4L
