Ian...here is the latest basketball shots I have taken. I believe at:

    ISO 2500
    shutter 1/500th
    at f/2.8
    AI Servo
    Middle focus point
Noise reduction with Nik software (Define 2.0)

I think these are a lot better. I like the fact that you got down low, to get a better perspective on your shots.

Wesley, I think the composition is much better. Plus like Tony said, down low is working really well for you.

However, these are still soft. Maybe it's converting them to png or upload/compress. Can you look to see where on the image your focus was pulled from?

    Hey Pete! Welcome.

"soft" refers mostly to focus. When shooting wide open (or f/2.8 for a f/2.8 lens), the area in front of and behind the actual point of focus is very shallow and if your focus point is off by just a little bit, the subject can be out of focus. Soft focus can also be caused by compression--like you'd use if you picked "save for web" or something similar. HTH.

Yeah. I've been reading a lot about flash recently (just looking at Joe McNally's recent book, Sketching Light. I've seen many of the examples in the book before and in this most recent book, he's explaining how he's lit many of them--when you look at some, it's not obvious but the lighting diagrams explain it all.

I've been screwing around with flash a bit and it's amazing what just a little flash will do.

Took this last night with my Canon.

How does one tell what Nikon len's are good. They don't have any sort of "pro" designation like Canon.
