To be honest, it doesn't really matter. Pick one. Pick the one you can hold in your, feels comfortable and you can reach the various controls while shooting.

It used to be the world of ratios and f-stops. With the advent of small flash, it's gotten a whole lot simpler and easier to understand.

Another good source of info is Syl Arena's book, "Speedliter's Handbook". If you're a Canon shooter, this is a great resource.

I really like David Hobby's approach to lighting. You can find really great information on his website, strobist.blogspot.com. Best of all, it's free.

If you want to read something really cool, Matters of Light and Depth is about lighting for cinematography.

    Nikkor glass > Canon Glass

The reason why Canon's telephoto lenses are gray is because of the glass they use to construct them. The type of glass they use doesn't like to much heat so Canon makes the bodies of the lenses to be able to get rid of excess heat.

Either or.. dosnt matter to me. My brother is buying my old setup so I can start fresh if id like. Only thing he dosnt want is my 100mm macro.
Im going either 7d or D7000. Prime, wide, and telephoto. I see better looking photo's coming off the Nikon's all over when I search the different lens's. Could be just a bunch of idiots using auto mode w/ Canon though. I get pretty good images w/ my xsi

That is quite the assumption there. In what way is Nikon's glass better than Canon's? Nikon doesn't have an 85 1.2, 50 1.2, 70-200 f4 IS, a 35 1.4 without such bad chroma aberrations and their lenses are generally more expensive. This can really be argued either way but I was just trying to say, neither is completely better than the other...both have their pros and cons.

    EDIT:

Also, Canon chose white because like you said, they want to keep as much heat off the lens from the sun as possible. It's really interesting how Canon and Nikon are so different. Have you ever heard of the phrase, "Canon was created by engineers and Nikon was created by photographers"...? It makes complete sense from an engineering point of view. I have been studying Civil engineering these last two years and some of the decisions Nikon has made baffles me...16-35 with VR?

Do you have some reference for that?

Because for the most part, they are equal lineups with regard to focal lengths and quality of lens. There are some lenses in the Nikkor lineup that I like better than the Canon counterpart. Like the 24-70 and the 14-24 (I have Nikkor to Canon adapter and use the 14-24).

But for the sake of argument, look down the sidelines at any sporting event. Count the number of black lenses and compare that to the number of white lenses. If Canon lenses where inferior, I'd expect to see a ton more Nikon shooters on the sidelines.

The short answer is either system and either line up of lenses are just about equal--of course, one will be better than the other but they leapfrog often enough that they are equal.

About the only area there's a clear winner is in small flash. I'd have to give the nod to Nikon. Their system is more user friendly than the Canon flash system by a long shot. You can still do all the same things--it's just easier with Nikon.

I was just joking on the Nikkor vs Canon stuff (I was going for the typical fanboy response)

I know Canon dominates the sports photography world.

And I should add that comparing the 500mm f/4, you'd swear they were made in the same factory.

I did a shoot out with some friends with the goal to compare not just the 500mm f/4 but also the Canon/Nikon hardware too. It was truly equal in so many ways.

The things I don't know much about are the Pentax and especially some of the newer mirror-less systems.

That's the thing I miss the most. RAW. There's only so much I can do in LR3 now. :(

Like I said, hopefully someday soon I'll find myself with a DSLR again. :)

    Thanks. :D
