Facts behind body lifts??

Been reading the last few months about lifts... Im not crazy about the bl im a suspension lift person... besides looks, what makes them junk on our tacos??

 

You will get the same answers that you have been reading.

They make the truck shimmy, vibrate, creak, etc...

They are unsafe because they lend to the possibility that the mount bolts may pull through the cab during an accident.

They raise the COG (center of gravity) with the only benefit of being able to fit larger tires.

And there is a possibility that the pucks could punch through the body mounts requiring major repair.

What he said. They are fin for mall crawling...not good for wheeling.

 

I wouldn't even put one on a mall crawler...they are unsafe.

If I had a MC i would do a spacer lift over a BL

 

You pretty much get what you pay for. If your cheap for your lift the ride will be terrible. Even blocks for that matter

 

yea or a DB lift.

Not saying i am for them, but i havent had a single problem out of my 1'' BL and I beat on my truck harder than most....

I dont think 1'' is a big deal, but bigger than that and it starts looking ugly and gets more dangerous.

 

yeah, a 1'' BL isn't bad at all.

 

I would agree. 1'' isn't terrible. On a 3'' suspension lift that would be enough for 35s with out major modification.

 

i had a 3" body lift on my 97 when i was younger. wouldnt do it again. it made the truck pop and creak like crazy. looked bad too.

 

Still have to tub the firewall though, just not as much cause you have an extra inch.

 

So what makes a 1" lift okay over a 3"? Does the higher COG cause much more stress on the mounts? I had figured a body lift is a body lift is a body lift.

 

yep higher center of gravity is bad all around man. the mounts where never designed with those shearing forces i would imagine that they would increase because your lifting the body up considerably with a 3 inch a bl thats just crazy!

plenty of guys who wheel the shit out of their trucks run a one inch though and they seem to be fine. n0rth comes to mind and a bunch of other guy's. i had actually thought about picking one up my self to get some more clearance for my 295's i wish they made a 1/2 inch bl lift though thats really all i need lol.

 

body lifts are fine, i came from a zr2 s10 forum (my previous truck) and everyone had em. I had one on my truck for years, and then i got in a head on collision with both cars traveling 50mph+ and the body lift stayed intact while the frame bent sideways.

I come over here to tacoma world and everyone hates on them, its not a big deal. The only reason i don't have one now is because i can only find a 3 inch name brand lift, and i think that will look stupid. 1 or 2 inch BL's are fine.

all of this is why they are really not a good choice.

if its for clearance and you only go one inch this is acceptable imo. anything more requires alot of work ie extended brake lines/linkages and all kinds of cosmetic stuff plus they look like shit and provide no ground clearance what so ever so there isn't much of a point to them unless your already lifted and want more clearance.

 

Sorry for missing that thread... Well I definitely dont mall crawl.. Its like shooting fish in a barrel... jk but seriously Im just slowly building my truck up by advice from you guys.. And wanted strictly legit answers. im all about workability. My truck is a daily driver but im offroad everyday at work

 

A BL is a BL, and I would avoid it whether it was 1, 2, 3'' etc...but the 1'' probably has significantly less chance of the shear forces causing any damage during any rough wheeling or an accident.

If I wanted to fit 35's I would run a 1'' BL just to help clear them...but the most I will ever run on this truck are 33's...so 3'' lift is the max I will ever go.
