Help me decide what tires to buy!

Background: I need new tires and I'm indecisive.

Question: Should I go for a 32" BFG AT or a 31" Goodyear Duratrac? I do light to moderate wheeling maybe 4 times a year, I'm mostly looking for snow/rain/mall parking lot curb traction.

The truck is a v6/5 speed with 3.91 gears, currently getting ~17 mpg on some old worn out 31" coopers and not trying to drop that number too much...

So internets, I'm trusting you to decide for me!

However it will probably be the same...

You'll have those in the BFG corner and those in the Duratrac corner and both sides will be pretty adamant that their choice is best.

I love my 31 x 10.5 BFG ATs. My last set on the Tacoma (3.6 5speed 4x4 TRD) last me 105,000 miles. Probably an anomaly for sure, but either way they lasted awhile, handled every condition thrown at them and I'm averaging 20 mpg city/rural hwy mix.

 

That's the one thing I keep hearing, BFG's seem to last into the 60k range while people are considering themselves lucky to get 45k out of the 'tracs.

I can't speak for the Duratrac's but I know they have had some good reviews. I my self have always had BFG's and have never been disappointed. They have been good to me so I went and purchased them again.

You got the v6, go for the bigger ones. I have 32" on my 4 banger & they do great.

 

I have the Goodyear Forteras best tire for just pure distance driving. 60000 mile tread lift warrenty. There not great off roading tho, thats why im switching to dura tracs soon. Go to the tire store you plan on buying from and let them give some advice. Then search it up online and pick the one that fits your needs. Tire rack is good to, they show a rating for each driving condition and you can compare prices.

 

i would also recommend the 32s. I bought 31s only to shortly after lift my truck and it looked bad lol

 

get the BFG T/A KO's. The duratracs are good tires, but everywhere I see them they are horribly overpriced. For the prices they want for them I can get a set of KM2's for a few bucks more.


BFG's are the best wearing tires made too...IMO.

My dad has a set of 32x11.5 BFG AT's on his frontier and they have 60k miles and have about 50% tread left.

I have the BFG ones currently on my truck. I must admit that they are really quiet and grippy. With that said, I used Firestone All Terrain and Kumho in my Jeeps and liked them a lot.


I'll probably get the Firestones, when the time comes, as I have access to employee pricing. But I won't deny that the BFG's are really good.


60-70K miles on tires ! Over on Miataworld (Miata.net, my other car is a Miata) we are happy to get 20K out of our V rated tires!!!

 

The duratracs are actually ~$30 cheaper online, but keep in mind that's for a 31 vs. a 32 in the BFG

Yeah my other car is an mr2, I'm lucky to get 15k out of anything on that beast...


Seems like the BFG is going to be the best for the money, my main worry is seeing my MPG's drop horribly

My local tire shop wants ~$190 for the BFG T/A's in 32's, and $229 per tire for the duratracs.

only place cheaper for the duratracs was wally world...and they want $200+ for the duratracs in 31''.

 

FWIW treadepot.com has free shipping on the duratracs until the end of the month if you were currently looking

Have you considered the Goodyear Authority tires? Walmart has them in 31x10.50 for $150.50. My friend has them on his 1 ton dually and has gotten great life out of them, even as a plow truck. I'm hoping mine will last a while on the Tacoma.

 

I heard a few horror stories about the life of those things, people only getting 20k out of em and such...at that point I'd rather spend a little more and get the long life the BFG is supposed to have

 

I've had the Goodyear Authority since the summer of '09. I'm 2k miles shy of putting 50k on them. I would buy them again but they dont make them in 285's. An added plus with buying tires from walmart is the road hazzard waranty is only $40 for all 4 tires, while its around $130 at discount tire.

 

Hmm I might be rethinking those, cheaper IS better...

 

I have actually heard nothing but the opposite. Most people I have talked to have got 60k+ miles on them.

They are goodyears, and they are made in the USA like the regular goodyears.

If I end up going 31's I will probably get the Authorities because they looks sick, and the price.

 

I'm sure you 1st gens can get closer to breaking 60k.
