Push button start ideas?

Has anybody installed a push button start on your frost gen tacoma? I was thinking about doing it to my 2001. I want to use one of those switches like on airplanes with the little red cover on the top that you flip up. I also want it to be where you turn the key to "on" then flip the switch. (I like it complicated and idiot proof) Anyway, if anyone has any ideas on how to do it I would love to know. I don't want to be just messing around and risk a fire.

did this in my old bronco, only it was out of necessity since the ignition didn't work.

All we did was splice into the wire that gets power when you turn the key past "on". I had the button under the seat.

I imagine the tacoma would be similar.

But I am assuming you'd want it to only turn on when the key is in the car… so it wouldn't be quite that simple?

 

I was going to put the key into the ignition and turn it to "On" then I think you could just take the wire for the starter and put it to a switch to put it simply

Make sure you use a momentary switch.

edit: I don't really see the point though if the ignition is still working, unless it's just for added security

 

so you still want to put the key in your ignition every single time and turn it to on before you press the button?

Yeah, I would still put the key in the ignition.... I think it would be kind of cool. Also different.

And I would want to use an aircraft switch, not a "button"

 

lol sorry. I just had to get it out that this "mod" seems like a step in the wrong direction.

 

Find an ignition on source of power. NOT accessory power like the radio. Something that only works with the key in the on position. Obviously there is a wire matching this description at the ignition switch, but it's probably pretty thick and going to be hard to splice securely. You don't sound like you've done much wiring and that's the wrong wire to mess up on. I suggest going to Autozone and picking up an add-a-fuse for around ten bucks. You have to go get a switch anyway. Maybe use the windshield wiper fuse. I think that's key hot only.

Then find the wire going to the starter relay. It's somewhere in that big bunch of wires coming down the steering column. Cut that wire and cap off the end that comes from the ignition switch. The other end is going to get attached to your new switch.

Connect both the key hot power and the wire going to the starter relay to your new momentary switch. That should produce what you are describing.

CAUTION: There are airbag wires in the column and under the dash. Use only a volt meter to test wires, not a test light. A test light can blow the airbags. Anything wrapped in yellow is definitely airbag related, but no guarentee that other wires are not. An airbag CAN kill you if it goes off in your face.

There are wiring diagrams on TTORA under the factory service manual link on their page. Find out what color wire you are looking for and test to confirm. Don't go in there blindly and start testing random wires. See above airbag warning.

All your are doing is moving the normal operation of the ignition start position to a seperate switch. It should not affect the clutch or neutral safety. Be sure to double check that when you are done.

 

Hahaa all good, I just thought I was the only one who saw this as " a step in the wrong direction" or I was very confused. But glad to see i'm not alone.

 

Yeah it kinda does seem like a step in the wrong direction, but I still think it would be cool. I know of nobody that has it that way

 

What you need to do is install a remote start. best of both worlds

By that you mean that's it's spring loaded to not stay cranking the engine, right?

 

why would you not try and put one in like the prius'

so you don't actually need to put the key in the ignition, just have it in the car and push the button... Not that I have any idea how, just a suggestion haha.
