Calibrating Speedo

I am looking at replacing my stock tires and wheels. I would like to put 265/75/16's on, but I would like to keep my speedo accurate! I talked with the toyota shop and they told me toyota does not have the capabilities to re-cal the speedo. Does anyone kwow of another way to keep my speedo accurate??

 

It's spendy, but the hypertech speedometer calibrator works.

but just going to 265/75R16 - that's a pretty small change - I'd try it first before I went off and changed anything.

 

Not sure if you can do it on the toyota's or not.. I had my 95 acura done at a local shop when I adjusted my rim's and what not.

Really, best thing to do is fine one of those photo radar speed things, fly by it at 50 and see what it pegs you at.. you shouldn't be off that much from wheels and tires.

 

What model truck do you drive?

I found that the 2009 TRD Sport that I had was +3mph by default. Now that I put the 265 Duratracs on my spedo reads dead on. You should be fine without any calibration. It should actually fix your overzealous stock speedo.

Try comparing to GPS. You might find the speedometer reports you traveling faster than you actually are (which is a good thing).

Most cars are off a bit but know how much could keep you out of trouble.

That's what I was gonna say. Or if you don't have access to one, try to find a cop and ask him if he would radar your truck, around here they will and tell you your speed without a problem.

 

Exact same scenario for me. Stock 265/65/17 spedo was +3-5 MPH went to 265/70/17 spedo is DEAD on with gps. However the odometer is now off by ~3%, which coincidentally is the same difference in tire size 265/70 is ~3% larger than 265/65

 

I noticed it too on a recent trip. Compared it with my GPS and I was 4-5 MPH off.

 

How was the distance traveled compared to the ODO??

 

It seemed fairly accurate but my GPS is in Kilometers and the truck is in miles so my calculations may be a bit off.

To add one more confirm (and we have been saying this for years): 265/75-16 will make your speedometer become accurate finally! It reads too fast with the factory tires.

 

for me was about 3% off. so when the ODO said i traveled 100 miles i really traveled 103 miles

 

So since everyone is aware stock tires read faster than you are actually going wouldnt that cause your mileage to be more than you really traveled and if that's the case wouldn't this effect your warranty coverage. Haha just a thought

Thats why I didn't recalibrate with larger tires. really going more miles than truck says
