I ordered my lift from Toytec and had it shipped to my Canadian address by Fedex. Today, about 2 months after the shipment arrived, I received a bill from Fedex Trade Networks for $180 in taxes and brokerage fees.

I am considering disputing the brokerage fees (not the duties and taxes). I believe they are arbitrary, and they were not disclosed at the time of payment or shipment delivery. I don't believe I am bound by any contract where I agreed to pay the fees.

My question is, has anyone successfully disputed brokerage fees?

usually you have to pay those fees upon reception of the package unless you have a commercial account with the shipping provider. that to say, when you get the package you have to pay the fees if you wanna take it of the hands of the fedex guy. to me they srewed up by giving it to you prior to make the payment.

also, i learned this from a UPS driver that by law you have to pay for the tax and duties but the importation fee from the shipper is actually not supported by the law (might be the non-contract thing) saying that if you pay the tax and duties then the gov is happy and who care about fedex or UPS getting their money. they can try to get you by a collecting agency but even that is a scam...half of the collecting agency there have no power whatsoever on you credit score, their work is to scare you enought to make you pay...for instence, i worked for shaw tv and if people owed money and didn't pay their bills we would treaten them that a collecting agency would contact them, then when they do, these agencies try every tricks to make you pay....but we all knew it was boggus and the had no power....i dought any collecting agencies would spend real time collecting small amounts like that!!!

i would not pay their fees, send a check for the tax and duties only...

Sales tax in ON is what, 13%? I'm guessing for an $1000 Toytec order, taxes were $130, and brokerage fee was only $50. For $50, decide if it's worth getting blacklisted by FedEx.

Hell, if you are going to dispute it, might as well just refuse to pay the full amount. Remember, FedEx already paid the taxes on your behalf, so the government shouldn't come after you.

You're right, I paid the stupid bill.

    Lesson learned. Don't use FedEx.

Update: I contacted Toytec and apparently these shipments should have been prepaid for customs and brokerage! Toytec is in the process of sorting it out.

Props to Toytec for excellent customer service.
