Clank when shifting to Drive from reverse

UPDATE

I finally figured it out. It was indeed the brake pads shifting.
I figured it out after letting the truck roll slightly down hill.
I put the truck in neutral let the truck roll forward a little pressed the brake.
I could hear the cluck but not near as pronounced.
Then shift to drive an NO clunk.
Glad it wasn't the transmission.



I have a 07' Tacoma V6 TRD-Off Road.
When switching from Reverse to Drive there is a "clunck" sound. The sound is
is more prevalent when on a downward slope.
To be honest I have NOT herd it do it on level or an upward slope ground.
The sound seems to be coming from the front of the truck but I not positive.

I did find that after it "clunks" and you are pressing the brake (Truck has not moved)
then switch back to reverse and then Drive again, it will NOT make the "clunk".
But if you drive an short distance in reverse (couple feet) and then switch to Drive the "clunk" sound comes back?

Anyone else have this sound or know what it might be?

 

I park on a slope every night. I have heard a hard sound a couple times like its a hard shift into the reverse gear. I don't know exactly what it is, but your not the only one.

 

Next time you roll down to a stop on an incline or wherever it is that it clucks at, before taking your foot off the brake set your parking brake then the next time you get in to go somewhere press and hold the brake before putting it in gear. If it doesn't do it then it's just the gears being misaligned and banging together to line up. My first truck was a 5-speed which if parked on an incline in gear only then it would pop out and roll so I'm in the habit of setting it even on my automatic taco.

 

How long has it been since you greased the drive-line zerks?

 

Mine is an Automatic Transmission.
I ALL WAYS use the E-Brake, it's VERY rare I forget to us it.
It has been a habits since I had my first Manual Transmission.
I thinking it is the drive-shaft or U-joint switching direction.

uhh, 16 months ago?
Maybe not even then, I assume that Toyota did this before I bought it.
But it was used when I bought it.
It very well could never have been greased since it was new?

I was under the impression the drive line was sealed.
My PreRunner had no Zerk fittings and I even called Toyota to verify it.
They told me the every thing was a sealed unit under the truck.

I guess, in all honesty, I really should climb under there and look?

Anyone know where the grease fittings are under the 4x4 Trucks?
I know it took me a a friend 20 mins to find them on a Dodge 2500HO.
There were cover in grime and in an awkward spot to find.

 

wtf at the quoted names? And greasing should be your fist swipe at this problem. Just crawl under and feel around as I'm not really sure where they are at.

As for the Grease fittings, there are NO fittings on the 2wd trucks.
There should be 5 on the 4x4 models.
As usual, I get what I deserve for assuming the 4x4 had none like my 2005 PreRunner.

 

I had this issue too...replaced u joints with greasable ones and it's gone. if it's something else, atleast your u-joints will be greasable..

 

He knows that, but you quoted something he didn't say...someone else did...computer derped.

The front drive shaft's zerks are on the center of the u-joint's cross. The rear shaft's zerks are on the cap end of the u-joint. With xfer case in 2wd, rear on jack stands, and trans in neutral, both drive shafts will spin freely and are easily greased.

Check your ujoints for rotational slop and check the differentials for the same. If there is any slop in the u-joints, replace them. Have the diff serviced if there is excessive slop(a small amount is normal). If there isn't any excessive slop, the noise is normal. There will be some noise when the drivetrain switches direction and all of the normal gear backlash and driveline slop is taken up.

 

I was told by the stealership it was the breaks that make the clank. Has anyone reported the problem and been told different?

 

thinking back...I had a clunk/pop when changing to D from R and straightening the wheels...then I had the u joint clunk..brake pads and u joints were replaced the same day and now all pops/clunks are gone...except a hmmmm noise, but thats a different story...

 

According to all my research this is most likely the problem.
Apparently it is the bake pads shifting directions in the caliper.
I think Toyotoa has a TBS on it. TSB# BR0005-07.
I can't find the whole TSB on BR00075-07. It would be nice to know if they have any ideas on fixing it.

I'm going to try and apply the E-Brake before shift to drive to she if this helps any. It should at least make it a bit quieter if it is the brakes.

I haven't yet climbed under there yet it been raining here and the ground is wet. It's supposed to rain today also, maybe this weekend it will dry out enough for me to get under there and figure this out.

 

I'm pretty sure the TSB your talking about is a different issue. I am pretty sure this problem of the clunk is the breaks and Toyota reps have said its normal.

That was the problem. It's still doing it.
I'm not going to replace the pads as there is plenty life left in them.

mine does the same thing it seems to clunk louder when the truck is cold or the ac is on.
