the company i work for, master lock, is bringing most of what little products that we do make in china, back to north america. most of the parts we make for the locks are already produced in milwaukee, but some product - due mainly to cheap foreign-made competition - had been sent china to save manufacturing costs.

but there are major problems in china now. manufacturing costs have risen significantly, and the factories by the coast actually have labor shortages due to the fact that many middle-class chinese no longer want to work in a factory. the long lead times (6 weeks in most cases) can cause headaches in forecasting. we also don't like to be dependent on chinese manufacturers who in some cases have quality issues, and product delays, which cause havoc for us and make our customers upset.

so we are "bringing it back." i think you will see alot more of this in the next year or two, which is a good thing.

This is what offshoring does - makes developing countries richer, at which point it makes more sense to just build it where you sell it, because labor "over there" is no longer so massively cheap that you can eat the shipping and still make profit.
