13 mpg city

My morning and evening commute is 3.5 miles, with about 7 stop lights to deal with, some days I get all green light some days all red lights, some days mix.

I use to average 17 mpg easy. For the past 4 fill ups i noticed I am now averaging 12.5 mpg.

145K miles, K & N air filter, stock tires (40psi). Chevron or 76 station (87) octane gas.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

 

Clean the MAF w/ MAF cleaner (its probably oily due to your K&N), get rid of the K&N and run a paper filter, clean your throttle body and change the fuel filter. And you should get back up to 17-18mpg in the city.

And if you haven't done plugs and wires recently, do them too.

 

Winter gas. Though we don't have much of a winter in california we still get winter gas which will lower your mpg.

 

could be a contributing factor...but not a 4+mpg loss factor

 

for me it has dropped the mpg. and I drive a 4 banger

 

What they said also remove the lead foot mod that helps a lot. lol

I'm suffering a 3-4mpg loss lately as well. I chaulked it up to winter gas at first, then decided to change my plugs and wires. So far I havn't noticed a return to the norm (17mpg) but it's only been through 1 tank. I guess I should clean the MAF and replace the fuel filter if it doesn't get better soon

 

My 1st. Step will be clean the MAF sensor, because I have the time to do it today.

What about cleaning the K&N filter instead of installing a paper one?

 

Yeah, the K&N requires regular cleaning. But because it requires oil you will just keep getting oil on your MAF, and the K&N isn't the best for filtration efficiency.

 

The AFE Pro Dry is the filter of choice I believe on TW.

 

Best IMO, is OEM denso filter. Purolator pure one filters are also very good.

OP: Keep in mind that high flow filters have little to no effect on gas mileage.

 

When I clean any filter that requires oil, use very light oil.. don't saturate the hell out of it. I also let mine sit for about 2 days to let any access oil drip off the filter.

 

1 step: Clean MAF sensor
2 step: Install paper air filter

will bounce back in after a full tank run and let you all know my results.

Stock exhaust?? No codes being thrown?

 

I've been getting 12-14 mpg for the last 2 months. I think it is a combination of winter gas, studded tires, cold weather, and the use of 4wd. In the summer I was getting 18 city, 21 highway...Hopefully it goes back to normal in a few months.

 

You drive a truck, you won't have great MPG. If you are So concerned about MPG trad truck in for Prius.
