Sorry im new to the tacoma. I bought my 09 4x4 off road in aug with 37000 on it. I went up to big bear and had to use 4h to get out of the drive way. I put it in 4l just to see the difference and it got stuck in 4l. I could change the knob but it wouldn't change back. all other features were where they normally are except traction control was turned off and i couldn't turn it back on ether. The truck eventually went back into 4h but I wonder why it was stuck. sorry for the question but all advice would be greatly appreciated as im going to mammoth in two days, thanks

Maybe the gears and linkages were just tight and haven't been used much? Like lockers some people have trouble engaging/disengaging them when new and they need to be actuated more to break in. Not 100% sure but that would be my first guess.

i have put it in 4l before and it beeped. When i initially put it into 4l it beeped, when i switched it to 4h it stopped. I turned off the truck, turned it on later that night, in 4h, driving the truck i knew it was stuck in low gears. I was going 30 at 3k rpm. I tried turning it into 4l and back a into 4h and in 4h it started beeping and had the same low gear high rpm. I stopped and put it into 4l and the beeping stopped but every time i put it into 4h it would beep and not go to the higher gears.

If it's beeping, you're doing it wrong. Read your owners manual for the correct procedure.

really it's a 2 step process. go into N and then turn the knob from 4L to 4H. you should wait a second or two for the system get out of 4L. you can feel it when it does and often enough you can hear a little clunk as it happens when the system gets out of 4L. if it is still beeping that means you did not wait long enough before you put it back into D, and you will have to do that process over again.

refer to your owners manual. it describes how often you should engage into 4wd in order to keep the internal mechanisms oiled and lubed.

    This sounds right.

The manual trans models won't shift out of or into low range without the clutch pushed down. Makes sense that the auto would need to be in neutral.

I put the truck into neutral every time I switch. Sadly when I bought the truck it didn't have an owner manuel, I just got the one on toyota owners so I'l be doing a lot of reading. I think you are right and I didn't wait long enough before switching from 4l to 4h

Is there no card in the sun visor above your steering wheel?

As stated already into or out of L4, you must me in N Neutral (not P Park)!
Second, if you are an Off Road TRD, make sure the A-TRAC is coming on (press A-TRAC button)... otherwise H4 will give you more traction (TRAC limited slip front and rear) than Low Range with open differentials only.

what? the photos don't help? I kind of think seeing the 4x4 how to sun visor card beats us interpretting what it says...
