Joining the USAF

i respect all branches but as all the Marines on here know, none of us joined for the quality of life... we joined to be part of the best. its looking like ill be re enlisting to the infantry next week, ooh fucking rah here i go again.

 

Warrior week???? Sounds tough.

Look, I'm not taking anything away from the Air Force, they do a great job and they have some really hard core guys doing some hard core jobs, like the PJ's, but on the whole you guys are treated pretty good and anyone who has ever been in any of services knows it.

I was stationed on Andersen AFB in Guam and I've seen first hand how it is for you guys. Now the Army has made some changes and it is no where near what it was like 20 years ago but it still hasn't caught up to the Air Force.

A little bit of advice, and you young guys can take it or leave it. The hooah stuff is cool when you are young but it does nothing to help you make a living when you either ETS or retire. There are a lot of opportunites in the military and free technical training is one of them. I have friends in the commo field who are being recruited by companies now and they haven't even dropped their retirement papers. I'll be retiring in October and I'm now looking at my employment opportunities and its nothing like what these guys have.

My son in law enlisted in the Army Reserve as a 68A (Biomedical Equipment Specialist). He has finished 8 months of a ten month AIT and already has a very good paying job waiting for him when he returns home. He's now good to go with a good paying career and the Army paid for his training.

Take advantage of everthing the military offers you to include educational benifits like Tuition Assistance and the MGIB. Use them - you earned them

this is very true, my first 5 years i was a helicopter airframe/hydraulic mechanic and since ive been out i have been offered a very good job working for sikorsky. im going back in because i want to be in the military and i want to be a Marine. i also have my GI bill + kicker for whenever it is i decide to get out.

Awesome man, 2E2 or 3C2 or 3C0, is the way to go!!! I am an ACFT mechanic and love it, but it is definetly not for everyone, and my current job has me working side by side with them, as weird as it may sound, they do have some parts of their jobs that work with ACFT, well UAV's anyway. Their jobs are definetly not for everyone as well, but the ones i know love their jobs!!! If you are planning on getting married stay away from the 1A jobs, they will keep you from home alot, which is OK when you have been married a lil bit, but is very tough on a young marriage. As for the deployment crap, it will propbably be one of the best times of your life, good friends working hard to get a job done and blow up some bad guys is always worth a beer(and everyone and their mom will buy you one when you return with stories, both good and bad). I have been deployed 3 times now, and don't care that i will have to go again, its part of what we signed up for, and deploying with the AF is much different than doing it with other branches, LOL. But good luck, and 1 word of advice, don't let all the losers in Basic Training ruin your attitude, a lot of them realize a little to late that they don't want to be in the Military and try bring everyone down with them, just know that if you forget about the losers and hold your head up, the military will treat you great. I remember when I tried to join the Air Force. The recruiter said i was fat and had to lose 20 lbs. The Corps wiped away the tears though... and replaced them with more. LMAO!!!

 

I may be following you here soon. Ill have my bachelors in december so ill go as an officer.... my dad is 22years retired with the air force as an f-16 pilot and i hope to follow in his footsteps..... he is now a captain with SWA... and looking at pay and all that may be what i angle towards.... of course if thats what i ultimately want i may look at heavy's instead of fighters.

 

thats awesome that you're joining up. i'm currently in the gulf on the USS Teddy Roosevelt. let me tell you. the Navy is awesome but theres something about being on a floating prison that irks my nerves. i'm an Aviation Machinist Mate 2nd Class and have been in almost 3 years. i LOVE it, and the way the economy looks, i won't be leaving it any time soon. we need more guys like you to join up and figure out that recruiters are the devil. haha yeah we all know it.

I always enjoyed how pissy AF guys get when the other services talk about the lifestyle, etc.

and I always loved how the Marines talk about pride, etc.

 

Ha!!! I get a bunch of shit from my son. He is a Combat Engineer with the Florida Army Guard. It's funny some of the things the Army guys come up with about the Air Force!

Well the Army is starting to wise up... when I got out, my troopers lived in a "dorm" styled after the AF "dorms" (hate that word... sounds like college.. they're barracks.. )

 

I hate all the new terminology. The Chow Hall is now the Dining Facility. The Motor Pool is now Vehicle Maintenance and the Bomb Dump is now Munitions Storage!
