odd problem when driving-electrical shutdown

this has happened a couple of times,wonder if someone has had the same problem,driving on the highway approx.70 to75,really doesn`t matter what speed,but all of a sudden all electrial power to gauges and motor shut down for approx. 1 second or so and then start up again,this may happen several times and then all is well,2005, v6,6 speed with around 98000 miles.maybe a relay going bad? would welcome the input.

 

I'd get your alternator checked.

 

Is the battery original? Those things last about 5 years.

 

Sounds like a loose main ground. Check your battery terminals and grounding points.

 

Possibly a ground or alternator. I had an alternator go bad on me and it did something similar. If your battery dies then thats probably it.

 

thanks everyone,but no weak or dead battery,gound is tight,i thought maybe there is an ignition relay going bad,gound for battery to body is tight

 

This ^ or you have a short somewhere.

 

Can you induce the problem by jiggling the ignition key? Sounds like bad ignition switch or something pretty early in the electrical line from the battery. I would start the truck up and start wiggling wiring harnesses and fuses in the fuse blockl

Had the exact same thing happen in my old 2000 kia... All electrical wires would blink and gauges would drop to zero then pop back up after a second or two. After checking the battery, terminal connections, etc i ended up replacing the alternator to fix.

 

Same here, actually on a Mazda 6 (2003) and the voltage regulator was causing the gauges to die and come back on with all kinds of fault codes. Not sure, but I thing most voltage regulators are piggybacked onto the alternator nowadays. I'd have that checked out at Pep Boys, Auto Zone, O'reilly or whatever you have close by.

 

^^^this. just had this problem on a cavalier. an attachment point for a ground wire coming the the engine block to the battery tray had rusted off. find out were all the grounds go and make sure the are getting a good connection. good luck
