PreRunners in the sand...

I'll admit now that I should have gotten a 4x4, but I didn't know what a pre runner even was when I got my truck.. And what's done is done. It's also a trd sport so I don't have a locker.

I go out to ocotillo every couple months to diet bike /quad / rzr...

As much as I'd love to be lt / full pre runner, I'm still stock.

So out there, there's a dune (I'm talking about devils slide, not blow sands), and it's not very steep at all, covers maybe a few acre. I'd love to drive up it sometime, maybe slide a little, have some fun. Will airing down real low and using the LSD be enough to not get me stuck if I'm smart, or should I just not do it.

So here's my question.. Is it realistically possible

How low is it safe to go, psi wise

Is it just stupid?

If I do get stuck, will a shovel be enough to get myself out, or would I have to beg a passerby to pull me o

 

youll be fine.. air down properly use youre auto lsd/locker.

rear as low at 8 front as low as 10psi.


i got a flat in the dunes running my front at 8psi so i run them at 10 now

 

So it should be possible if I'm smart..

Do you think if I accelerate quickly and go for a donut, will I just dig in, or do you think it'll be fun

 

Would it be a good idea to bring some carpet strips so that if I get stuck I can jam them in below the tires and let the tires suck them in as I gain traction

 

Yeah, I'd only really do a slow donut.. I'm a pretty cautious person, especially when it comes to my truck.

 

I keep a recovery strap with me.

So do you think if I stop on the sand for a little while, will I dig in when I am ready to go again?

In other words, is stopping a no no? Or is it okay?

 

yeah, its going to take a little to get used to it but youll get the hang of it. i mob the beach almost every weekend and im 2wd. its all about momentum. i got just about anywher but you just have to go faster it also depends what tires you have. accelerating fast from a dead stop will most likely get you stuck. accelerate slowly until you start to get traction. and doing donuts wont get you stuck just be careful

bring a shovel if anything.. cause if you dig yourself to the rear axle, carpet wont do shit.


add another thing.. only time ive gotten stuck in the sad was going up a hill.. wosrt part is going donw backwards. thought i was going to flip my truck. not very fun

stopping... if i were you i would only stop on a downward slope. thats what i do. no matter the situation i always have my truck facing a downward slope when i decide to park and get out. i only park it on flat ground when i know its somewhat hard packed sand

 

Do you guys think it's worth it?

I love driving on the dirt out there, just think the sand would also be fun.

Devils slide isn't real steep..
Would backing down be that bad?

 

Sounds like the idea is...

Keep speed up
Don't do donuts
Have recovery strap and shovel
Only stop if I'm facing down hill.

Any other basics?

 

what gets you backing down is you cant straighten out.. say you go up the hill and get stuck. its natural for you to turn the front wheels to try and get traction which makes your truck somewhat sideways.. backing down your front wheels have no traction so theyre going to slide down whatever way you turned. only real way do get it straight again is to go faster which usually not good i had a little mishaps this last weekend at pismo. tried going up a hill at night and ended up being to slow. backed down and got sideways. luckily i was able to dig myself out and not flip. the hill at 11:33 was the one i was going to slow up at night.

I can't see that video very well on my iPad, but the dune I'm talking about is nothing like anything at pismo

 

I hope I'm talking about the actual devils slide. I've always thought the hill I'm talking about was devils slide. I could be wrong.

It's really not steep at all..

 

i used to have an ipad got rid of it because you cant see videos very well haha. but as long as you air down properly you should be able to go most places. just be smart about it. youll eventually find out what your truck can and cant do.

Hmm, we will see. It also depends on how recently it's rained and how dense the sand is. I'll run it on my dirt bike to check it out. If I have a 4x4 friend along I'll go for it, if not, then we'll see....

 

yep, thats how i was for awhile but i just started doing more and more with my truck and boy, does it get fun!!
