You would just stop it down to like f/16 and ISO 100 or 50 on a high end body.

i figured it would be something like that but even then with the shutter open that long it wouldn't totally wash out the picture or would it be dark enough to get a good exposure?

I think it would have to be really dark outside

for sure thought so...also one more question i feel like a damn noob haha, do the high end bodies let the shutter open that damn long like 30min?? or is there another trick to it?

I don't know. I know my T1i has a Bulb mode where you can hold it open as long as you hold the button. You would obviously have to have a remote shutter release and holding the button would be a pain so I don't know how they did it.

I like it, I like the motion of the clouds a lot! Plus the road is cool.

(EDIT) look for a wireless remote on Amazon for your camera, they should be like $3 bucks.

Yeah 30 min are hard to shoot, and hard on the camera (heat and hot spots on the sensor) but it depends on what your shooting. smaller fstop and always your lowest iso, but I also use a 10 stop filter for some.. Like this..

Basically, something like ISO 200 for a Canon body, shutter to 'bulb' and f/4-5.6 ish for aperture. How long the shutter is open depends on the amount of light in the scene.

This exposure is about 2 minutes.

While this one is only 30 seconds.

Both shots were taken at night. The first is a 'moon bow' and the second, just a really bright night.

With a very dark sky, you can leave the shutter open for a long time to get star trails. Sometimes around 15 minutes or so. A lot depends on how bright the scene is--and if you have a near by city, that orange glow will affect the length of time you keep the shutter open as much as the moon.

As a general rule of thumb, if you want stars, you need to keep shutter speeds 20 seconds or less--preferably less which means higher ISO's and potentially wider apertures (f/1.2 - f/2.8). The reason is the same as keeping the shutter open longer to get trails--the earth is moving.

Some of the constellation shots you see are long exposures made either piggy backed on a telescope or having the camera mounted on it's own celestial mount.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you may want to turn on noise reduction. This adds to the processing time and means you need to make sure your camera batteries are charged. Noise reduction may take as long as your exposure took.

Some things that help with long exposures. ND filters (when it's really bright out), either an intervalometer or remote shutter release (with a lock). The intervalometer is handy when you want to repeat a shot (not necessarily a long exposure) otherwise, a standard release works just fine.

For long exposures, you need a really sturdy tripod. preferably one you can hang something from to weight it down. The head needs to be as sturdy as the legs. Or you'll have soft exposures (or downright blurry shots).

A red headlamp helps get things set up. Also, if your camera body has an LED to indicate the shutter is open, tape it up or shot will be ruined by the LED's reflected light--feel free to ask me how I know this. Dress accordingly and bring a chair--you'll be there a while :D

One of the first ever long exposures I did. Would have been much better with the ISO turned down but I didn't know back then

1600 is a bit high for this kind of thing but, you see what you made? You have short streaks which are also pretty cool.

Don't be afraid to try stuff. It's free :D And unlike film days, you can try as many different ISO settings as you like too :D

Don't forget. You can make long exposures during the day too. But, you'll probably need a 10-stop Neutral Density filter to make it happen. Slows down water to make it silky smooth. Kind of like this:
