Running through Mud will hurt your truck???

I have a 2011 Double Cab Pre-Runner 2X4. A buddy of mine who owns nothing but super huge lifted Chevy's and dodge's 4X4's keeps saying to me that if i take my truck out in the mud it will ruin/harm my truck. But he won't explain to me how or why?

I'm not trying to crawl through 4 feet of mud. I'm going out to a place that is rather flat trails, that happen to be very muddy thanks to 2 days of rain and plan on tearing ass through them. Total dept, no more than 4-6 inches max of mud if I even encounter that.

I do understand rocks and what not will scratch the paint maybe. But I just plan on running through some trails and spraying mud roosters behind me.

I'm thinking my buddy is more talking about going through a few feet of mud, when I'm talking a few inches. Idk, he likes Dodge a lot so who know's what's going through his head.

Is there something that can really damage the truck due to mud?

Getting mud/water sucked into your diff breather if you go deep enough. You would have to change your diff fluid.

Having a tire come off the bead, maybe.

Your buddy's pride when he sees your lowly Taco tearing ass thru the mud.

Deep mud can tear shit up but 4 inches shouldn't do much damage to your truck.

 

I had an idler pulley explode and seize this past weekend due to my past mudding escapades. IH8MUD

 

Go Hit the Dam Mud For God sake! And enjoy it while your doing it! Your truck will be fine! Just dont drop into 4 feet of it brother!

 

That happened to me as well, but that was after three years of wheeling in all conditions! Mine was easy to replace,

I really don't think that I'm going to hit deep mud.. Just a few inches, maybe 6 like I said. I'm not sure if he is just messing with me since I'm new to off-road or if he actually has reasons.

You should've used A-TRAC.

 

Our trucks have 9" of clearance without a lift. You will be fine. As other said, don't go so deep the top of your differentials are submerged

 

All the abrasive material in mud gets worked into every knook and cranny and is very harsh on your rotating components. A good washing of the underside of your truck with a low pressure stream of water will help prevent premature failure of your parts...but if you make a habit of mud running shit will break earlier than normal.

Just drive it! So what if there's more wear and tear by slingin a little mud. "Oh what fun it is to ride through a big mud hole tonight..."

 

A little mud is no problem. The important thing is to WASH THOROUGHLY afterward...mud becoming part of your truck and getting into pullies, belts, radiator fins, etc. is not a good thing.

Personally I'm not big on it because I don't like the cleanup, but as with most things, as long as you do your maintenance, you'll be fine.

 

Mud gets in the frame and causes rust. Mud can wear belts by getting dirt stuck in them (turn the belt and look at the groves for shiny rocks) Gator back belts will fix this. Mud gets in the air intake no matter how careful you are. There are a million sensors that can leak and the mud/water will cause them to fail, Your rear brakes will get packed with mud and scince they are drum brakes they can seize up or just wear very fast. Also repeated mudding will chow through wheelbearings and axle seals like noones business. Water gets in the diffs/tcases and does not do happy things to gears. Causes rust and dirt will end up wearing through seals causeing drivetrain leaks.

Although a few times a year with a little wash after wont cause any problems. its more so the sinking the truck up to the frame thats going to fuck it over.

and if you have a stick shift and your under water try not to shift. Can cause mud to get in the fingers in the clutch and cement it open... Long ride home in a tow truck because your friends jeep has a frozen clutch lol.
