Using 4x4 on pavement

Using 4x4 on pavement will mess up your truck right not only wear out tires extremely fast?

 

Going straight is no problem , tight turns will bind up the front end

 

the one and ONLY time 4x4 should be used on pavement is when there is a shit ton of snow and ice on it...and in that case you probably shouldnt be driving anyway.

 

Or a boat ramp

yeah that too...but turn it off before you turn. luckily the ramp i use doesnt get bad...yet.

FWIW , I drive in 4x4 for days when there is snow on it .

 

Okay just making sure bc my friend was telling me how is it harmful can it be on the road if I use it on mud but I told him he's a idiot bc it's two complete different surfaces

I dont have the issue down here Our ramps just get slippery at super low tides when the shit thats covered by water 90% of the time is exposed and its covered in algae and shit.

 

Is turning tight in snow still okay even if your grabbing some pavement

 

i have had to use it on my drive way 2 times. when it has been raining really hard. my drive way it kinda steep and get slick. drive way is straight tho. just don’t turn at all.


also i COULD use new tires.. but i don’t have the money right now.

 

You will still feel it bind up , as long as there is some slip it's not too bad .

Generally you want to try to take a wider turn , or pop it back to 2wd if that is an option

 

and you will know when it binds up...trust me...

 

If it's slippery than you'll be fine; that's what it's there for.

... I use mine all the time in snow and ice (Alaska). By my understanding, it becomes a problem on dry pavement. No problems and I'm into my second winter with my truck.

Well... only issue is recent replacement of my front wheel bearings at 58K miles, but that's a known weak spot for my year and I don't believe related to my use of 4X4.

 

I flip mine between 2HI and 4HI as needed ... like he said, 2HI is better for a tight turn. You'll feel the truck kind of "crab walk" if you turn tight in 4HI (or 4LO for that matter).

 

i used my truck in the snow last winter driving to and from work in 4hi going 50+. didn't have alot of sharp turns since i was mostly on the freeway. always look forward to winter so it'll snow again so i can drive in it. would take alot for me to put it in 4hi even in the rain. just no needed for it.

 

seriously...thats a shitty answer. there is, unbelieveably, an inbetween for snow conditions on road. there is no problem at all with driving on the roads with 3" of snow, are you saying that 4wd is not needed for example, with 3" of snow or that 3" of snow is too much and you shouldnt be driving in it?

4wd is for low traction sitiations, on pavement thats pretty limited to situations like snow and ice, you dont need 4wd for when it rains, thats not low traction enough. as said before driving with 4wd on with dry pavement will cause it to bind or even break.
