Would an 03 rear diff assembly work in a 02?

    I have a chance to buy a locked 03 diff for my 02, but the guy selling it said it would not work with a 2002. This doesn't make sense to me because I thought they were the same.

    they are as long as it is the ratio your looking for and it is from a tacoma not a 4runner. also elocker and non elocker are not interchangeable.

    This assumes you are talking about the third member and not the whole differential.

    OP is asking about whol rear diff assebly, in which case there's no problem swapping elocker/non-elocker. Also, it is completely possible to install a TRD elocker third member in a non-TRD housing, it just takes some fab work with a grinder, drill, and a bit of welding.
