So I've been trying to keep track of my gas mileage with Fuelly.com. It seems to me that it calculates fuel costs in a backwards manner. Rather than looking at the number of miles you drove since your last fuel up and dividing that by the number of gallons from your last fuel up, it seems to calculate based on how many miles you drove by how many gallons you just put in, rather than how many gallons you just used.

Or am I entering my data wrong?

assuming you always fill to the exact same level, those two numbers (fuel used and fuel added) should be the same?

For some reason I'm . Anyway you get the mpg by taking the miles you have driven and divide by the gallons you put in, right?

I think the average person always tops of there fuel tank. So if they burned 12 gals than they would fill up with 12 gals. Otherwise how would you know how many gals you burned?

Have you looked at the instructions for Fuelly??? Cause there are some assumptions/standards to make the measurements work....Mot sure if the site explains it.

Well then it can't possibly give you the right number. If you don't fill to the same level every time (first click for example) there is no way of knowing how many gallons you just burned.

If you can't top up your tank for some reason, you can click "partial fuel up" when entering your data. It won't give you an MPG value for that tank or the next one but it will roll into your total.

Yes, divide the number of miles by the number of gallons. Fuelly seems to calculate things based on what it thinks you are going to get out of the tank that you just filled up with. Seems backwards to me.

And no, I don't always fuel up at the same time or with the same amount. Maybe I just need a few gallons to get to work in the morning, and then I will fill up on the way home (which is usually when the prices drops anyway). Usually I wait for the low fuel light to come on, and then hit a gas station within 10 or 15 miles of driving and then fill up.

Maybe this explains peoples' Fuelly numbers being all over the map .

x2, I guess OP you have to keep it consistant in filling up. I fill once a week normally around the same amount of gas. I should try it to see what it says for me.

For instance, this morning I filled up on the way to work. I had driven 351 miles since my last fill up, and put in 17.31 gallons. Fuelly seems to think that I am going to get 20.3 miles per gallon out of this tank, and I'm pretty sure that when I fill up again in three days, that I will be somewhere around 18.6-ish gallons.

Maybe im not understanding the question or maybe my thinking is just way off. But i think fuelly gets data from your specific vehicle. (i.e) it knows what size tank your vehicle has. So maybe my thinking is wrong but if it knows how big your tank is, then as long as you fill it, the gallons added is the amount burned in the miles drove from last fill up. Basically say your tank is 20 gallons. You drove 300 miles and then went to fill up and it took 18 gallons. So you burned 18 gallons in 300 miles.

Again maybe im just misunderstanding but that was my logic when i started using it.

But yes if you dont fill up from whatever point your at its not going to be accurate. And im sure the numbers arent perfectly exact due to topping off or what not. But it close enough and its simple to just enter 2 numbers on the go.

    this.

if you want to do partial fill-ups, get a program on your android phone called fuel log. It will track things if you don't fill up completely as well.

This is based on the assumption that the fuel gaugees on our dash boards are accurate, or that the low fuel light come on at the point in the low part of the tank. It's been my experience, at least with other vehicles, that those two are not dependently related, and that the low fuel light can vary by as much as a gallon or so either way.

And from my tracking over the last couple of tanks with my Tacoma, the low fuel light seems to come on at about the 3 gallon or so mark.

    :frusty: No, it isn't.

This thread is making me lose any respect I had for Fuelly.

You are the one thinking backwards.

Everyone else fills up, drives X miles, fills up with Y gallons, and so they know they got X / Y mpg.

Fuelly assumes you filled last time too so you used 17.31 gallons over that 351 miles. You can only look back on what you drove and how much gas you used.

Fuelly isn't making any assumptions about what you are going to do in the future like you are think. The fillup volume tells us how much we used in the past, not the future.
