Coyote Hunting

ok im looking at the savage axis xp either the 22-250 or the 243
all i wanna do is coyote hunt with it.
it is fairly windy up here in saskatchewan so thats why i was leaning towards maybe the 243 but what do u all think???

 

Heavier bullets will be a plus if there will be wind. 223 is common done here in the States and certainly has more than enough to wallop to kill a man so a coyote will be no sweat for either of the cartridges you are considering.

I shoot 'em with a 223 if I know I'm gonna be in a densly foresested growth area cuz I an't gonna need long range or 7.62/308 if I'm trying for 500+ yard shots out in the open.

 

Get a .223 like that guy said ^. .243 are more expensive and a .223 is a more versatile round (can use it for varmints also). Oh, and nice work putting this in the right section

This was almost the same thing I was thinking. The .243 would be way better in the wind, of course. But the difference between a 22-250 and .223 would be pretty small, not worth the difference in ammo price, (in my opinion).

 

it is! i have a 243 for deer/ coyote hunting. works great. hove not shot a coyote with it tho.

 

Yes I'm sure it is. But, if you sell the Pelt, you don't want a super large exit/entry wound. Smaller the round, the better. And it's really only fair/fun if their close. Rifle hunting all-around is just unfair. That's why I bow hunt

 

I have a .243 for deer as well, love that gun.
thought so. therefor, better accuracy at longer distances

My brother and I have been coyote huntin for the past few days. He's been taking his .243 and I have been bringing my .22

 

yep me to mine is sighted in at 100 yards. we hunt on 200 acres. about 1h drive.

i have the rossi triple threat. i can change from 243 to a 20G to a .22. got 3 different barrels.

 

Similarly to the thoughts of others my first thought is why not 0.223?

I had a remington 700 .243 for years. I've taken deer, hogs, coyotes, prairie dogs...you name it! The .243 is a great small to medium game round.

After that I changed to a 7mm-08. It was every bit as good as the .243 but I could shoot up to a 140 gr bullet, I think the 243 was only a 100gr bullet
