Truck sticks then loud BAM and it moves

So I have a 96 Taco 4x4 2.7l 5spd.

A while back the truck just setting in my driveway or the parking lot at work would be hard to get moving. I give it some rev's and BOOM a loud break loose type sound would come about and it would move. This only happens after setting for 5+ hours and is independant of the temperature.

I took it to the dealer a while back and they checked the e-brake and it was stuck so they relieved that, replaced a rear axle seal and told me all was good. I pulled away and for a couple weeks it was fine.

It started to stick again and is getting progressively worse. So I take it back to the dealer; told them they did a shit job and to take another look because they obviously didnt fix the problem.

I just got off the phone with the guy and he tells me the front calipers are sticking and need to be replaced. I luckily have no issue doing brake work and can handle this one. What I am wondering is; do you guys think that is the problem. I can pick up the calipers on the way home from work or order them but do not want to waste money on that if it isn't the problem

Any help would be greatly appreciated ASAP!

 

On mine, its the E-Brake. Happens if it gets wet and rusts in place. Normally when I wash the truck I'll leave the E-Brake off so it won't stick...

 

Yeah its not the ebrake. It happens if I leave the ebrake disengaged and just throw it in first when I park.

 

Hmmm... Now that I think about it I kind of remember someone talking about this, but I forget what it was. I'll have to try to find it.

You're welcome. However, it's probably the cold thats making them stick. You could try rebuilding the calipers yourself, however it's usually easier to buy some already re-conditioned calipers from your local auto parts store instead.

 

It is not dependent on weather or temperature.

 

I can't seem to find the thread I was talking about, but I know it was on here somewhere. If you have the time search around and you should be able to find it.

 

What are you searching under deevon? I tried search for a while and couldn't come up with anything.

I looked for a few things... Stuck truck stuck e brake... anything I could think of that would pop it up... I just don't have the time to look through them all. But like I said I know there is a similar thread. Its here.. just keep looking..

 

The dealership went over the rear brakes last time and said they looked good. That's how they found the bad axle seal and ebrake. The calipers aren't terribly expensive so unless someone comes up with a "this has happened to me before and here's how I fixed it" solution I will probably proceed with that.

hey man. i’m not trying to be mean or any thing. but i kinda agree with macgyver. that is has to do with salt. i think i have hear my uncle the lives in New York about 30 min from buffalo. talk about this.( i don’t remember what it is and it was not even on a toyota) but but it’s something that maybe rusting.

 

I understand the rust issues believe me.

That being said; I am picking up the calipers today and doing the swap this evening. Hopefully its pretty straight forward as I have done calipers on multiple cars with little issue.

It was stuck so bad this morning that with the little bit of ice on my driveway I could not get them to brake loose until I was about 80' down the driveway and into the road. That sucked!!

 

Hey, I'm sorry I asked for help.

 

Do yourself a favor and buy a vacuum pump if you don't already have one. It makes bleeding the brakes by yourself a piece of cake. Also works a lot faster than having one person pump the brakes while the other bleeds.

I had this happen a few months ago, mine was doing the same thing. I noticed when i jacked my rear end up even with the e-brake released one of the back tires would not move. I adjusted the the tensioner inside the brake drum way back out to loosen it up, but that didnt completely fix the issue. So I bought new parts, replaced every part inside the brake drum, springs, pads, tensioner, and everything. Sanded the inside of my drums down a little also. That fixed my problem. I didnt read everything you said yours was doing, but mine was makin a popping noise when i went to take off somewhere, or especially when it had been parked for a few hours.

 

OP, did you get the calipers changed up? Did it solve your problem?
