I'm waiting at the mall for my wife and was wondering how much oil should I be taking out during an oil change. We went to Austin yesterday and I left the truck draining from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm. When I dumped the old oil back into the new oil's leftover jug it filled it completely to the top with no room to spare. When you buy the oil, the jug is not filled to the top, there is actually quite a bit of room leftover.

So the question is, if we don't ever take out 5.5 but put 5.5 back in, isn't there really more than 5.5? Especially if we do not let it drain for 12 hours?

I've actually noticed this for years on several different vehicles but never put any serious thought to it.

Do not know the exact amount, but it will not hurt the engine to put in 6 quarts. I have never let a vehicle drain for 12 hours, so it is likely, a little more then 5.5 quarts, drained out of your truck.

unless your truck uses oil.....the same amount should come back out.i always use 5qts and that fills the jug back up

Do you drain for 12 hours everytime? You probably got more out this time, I usually only drain for 30mins at the most, should I be letting it sit longer?

The filter usually holds some oil too.

This includes the oil filter. Oil filter was off the last 30 minutes draining into the used oil pan. The filter seems to drain better if you leave it upside down, turn it right side up, repeat.

I was actually expecting more oil than I got. Although the 5qt jugs are not completely full to the top when I buy them, chances are that there is room for 1/2 a quart which would make sense why it filled completely to the top this time.

I typically only let the oil drain for 30 minutes max. When I do this, the 5 qt jug only fills back up to about where the new 5qts were. The other 1/2 a quart must be in the block, I was just wondering if anyone else noticed this and did not add the .5 of the 5.5 as a consideration.

I really put too much though into this.

Did you drain warm oil out of the vehicle? Thermal expansion.

Roughly. A recently run engine (I warm mine to temp before oil changes) will have some of its oil fill coating engine parts and you won't get every last drop out. But it's a small enough difference to not matter.

This. Jesus, 12 hours? I don't have that kind of patience.

I typically underfill by about 1/4 of a qt. because it's better to be slightly low than overfilled. Really though, ToMoCo has built enough of a tolerance in that it shouldn't be an issue.

    I would agree ;)

The truck was just sitting in the garage all day anyways, I had nothing to lose and was not inconvenienced in anyway.

And yeah, it's just an oil change. The one thing we do not want the grease jockeys at quick oil change places touching, not even the dealer. Many of us didn't even bother to take Toyota up on their free maintenance offer because we did not trust their lack of attention to any detail at all.

i usually drain take off the filter after its drained. and then clean my tools up cause i already have oil on them lol (15mins or so) then take some fresh oil pour some in till it comes out of the drain hole. plug the hole, put on new filter. add oil. start her up check for leaks check oil level. if its all good pack it up

I've noticed this with mine... I put 5.5 qts in and only get the 5 gal jug full out.

There's a thread around here where toyota says it's normal to use oil. Can't find the thread right now...

I thought he was putting 5.5 qts in and getting less out

I saw that... but "assumed" he was also adding the other .5 qt like the truck needs :notsure:

I got a completely full 5 quart Mobil 1 Syn jug worth out this time. Right up to the top of the jug. I normally only get right up to where the 5 qt mark is on the side of the jug which is quite a bit less than all the way up to the top.

I always refill with one 5 quart jug and 1/2 of a quart bottle.

Sorry for the confusion. And the pointless thread. Truthfully most of my threads are pointless. I will just revert back to lurking.

that is my procedure also with the mobil1 synthetic. your normal procedure is the same as mine. i guess its sludge building up on the inside of my engine or the oil goes into my drain pan and gets stuck in there somewhere with all the other build up and gunk in the drain pan/oil holder. by the way this is all on an 07 4runner v6.. same engine as the v6 tacomas

and i will go back onto my lurking lol

i WOULD RATHER BE A LITTLE LOW THEN OVERFILLED TOO MUCH OIL IS A REALLY BAD THING IN AN ENGINE MY 4.0 ALWAYS TAKES 5 QUARTS OR A HAIR MORE PUTS IT RIGHT ON FULL I WOULD NOT DUMP IN 6. 5.2 IS THE SUGGESTED REFILL W FILTER CHANGE IN MY BOOK.
