I am looking to get a custom exhaust made, using a flowmaster muffler at a local shop rather then buying a kit online. I seems like that would be cheaper then a kit.. Id like to get some costs that yall have paid for either an online kit or local muffler/exhaust shop.. I got an estimated quote of $350 from Meineke seems kinda steep since I can get a kit online for nearly that much..

silverworm: I'm in Austin too and I just got my muffler replaced from Muffler/Radiator King
    http://mufflerradiatorking.com/
I got a 50 series flowmaster with stainless steel tip installed for 270. He quoted me to do a dual with custom piping exiting from both sides (not the rear), it would be around 380 out the door. I'm thinking it may be cheaper for you to just get the muffler and let a muffler shop do the piping for you.

EDIT: BTW, Meineke (the one by catfish parlor on 183) quoted me 275 installed for just the 50 series flowmaster with no tip.

I was looking at that place actually, crazy that you mentioned it. I was going to get a quote somewhere and then have them beat it. Do you know how much they charged you for the muffler?

220 for the muffler because the installer needed about 6-8" of pipe they had to put under there because the flowmaster is much smaller than the OEM muffler. The rest of it was labor and for the stainless steel tip. I got to watch the whole thing from start to finish.

I got the TRD cat back for $0

I didn't order it and it was on the truck they handed me the keys too, since it wasn't an option that I selected during negotiation of the price I refused to pay for it.

I also got the skid plates for $0 because of the same reason. :p

I pay about $1.69/gallon for the stuff that creates the exhaust. It was almost $4/gal this summer, though.

Thank you... I'm here all week. Tip your waitresses.

on the 18 inch , did they have to extend the pipe or was it the same size as OEM? So far I have gathered I need 2.25 inlet and I can do 2.50 outlet w/ 3inch tips like they have on the flowmaster kit. I just need to find the best place for a muffler and length of the muffler

Flowmaster #17432 kit (dual exits -catback exhaust kit w/50 series muffler) purchased $352 online (total) and installed at home for free.

If you go the custom route - be careful where you get exhaust custom made. Only get it done a reputable exhaust building shop.

I've seen some scary hack jobs in the past.

I don't have the means to install it at home as I have no welder , I might be able to scrape this together though, cheapest kit I've seen! are they rear exits or side? its hard to tell from the kit all laid out like I see in the pics..

I got magnaflow for 150 but I also have it as no show, so it cuts off under the bed. I dont know how everyone else feels with the magnaflow but I dont really care for the sound. I'm thinking about going to flowmaster myself.

    Hi All,

Being new to a Tacoma and reading this thread I dont understnad why 09 and late Model tacomas need new mufflers? I cant recall the last time I needed a muffler since 1987.

What is the major reason that all the above posters are changing out the new mufflers for an aftermarket one? Is it better MPG, more HP?

    Thanks in advance.

Ya I had my flowmaster 40 installed with a turndown right under the bed for 150 as well. Probably could have gotten it cheaper if I shopped elsewhere, but there is only one shop in town that sells flowmaster and I was pretty excited to get it.

As for the manaflow, I had them hold that up there as well, sounded pretty good, but I've had a flowmaster on all my other trucks and loved how deep it was, still sounds a bit different on the tacoma, but I liked it more.

I have managed to find the kit for $310 shipped, here is the link for anybody that might be interested.

    http://performancepeddler.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=FLO17432

I am just wondering how much I can get it installed. I will probably buy this in a few weeks.. still would like to know if its rear exit or side exit, id prefer side..
