Vented Double cab sub Box????

Has anyone tried this box out yet? Is it any good? I thought on Vented or Ported boxes you need more air space than with a sealed box for the sub to work closer to its peak performance? Guess its made by R/T Enterprises. Couldn't find their actual web site...

"It is a known fact that in order to create a 50% increase in your sub bass system you would need to double the power. For example, if you are hitting 135 dB's with an amp that produces 500 watts of RMS power, in order to hit 138 dB's (50% louder) you would need 1000 watts of RMS power. Please explain to me how that a 50% increase when that only a 3db increase?

 

SPL is a logarithmic measure.

 

Every 3dbs is supposed to be around teice as loud to your ear, they also say as a rule of thumb that using a ported box will net you sround 3 dbs

 

I'd avoid this since it does appear to be a supercrewsound box, or at least similar dimensions, which means .7 cu.ft. of airspace, which I don't think is close to sufficient for any 10" sub in a ported enclosure.

 

This ^ plus the response above it.... System engineer on sonar equipment is my background, so I can confirm for anyone questioning.

The only problem with going to a ported box from sealed, or vice versa, is that you change the SPL vs. frequency response of that enclosure mated with given sub and amp.

Try to imagine it on a graph, where x axis is frequency and y axis is SPL at given frequency, changing the box is going to change that graph. make sense ?

 

Facts

• Every additional 3db needs twice the power or twice the cone area.
• Ported sub enclosures are said to give 3db increase. I disagree mainly becaue I don't care about peak numbers. A proper tuned box can yield well over 8db of increase at certain frequencies vs a sealed box. (I have graphs that can prove this and I'm more than happy to post them if you care to see them)
• 10db is percieved to be twice as loud. 3db is likely the smallest increase you would notice.

Go home and look at your receiver in your home theater setup. They typically read in db and count UP . Set it to a normal level. Now increase 3db (ex: from -20db to -17db) and check out how much louder it's gotten. What you're done is double the power but it's really not twice as loud. Not even close. Go from -20db to -10db and THAT is twice as loud.

There are several subs that will work in this airspace, but I do not see tuning frequency, so its hard to tell how well (or poorly) it will work.

But, in general, I would agree - prefab ported boxes that you do not know enough about, or have the ability to check, are great to avoid.

 

I'm sure you could shoot them an email and ask about the tuning frequency. I didn't see the ports in that picture. Where are they located?

 

Did you look good in the pics man? The ports are in the middle.

I have this same box, whether its made by the same people or not, it works great. I have to JL 10's in there and I have no problem with it. I don't know much about the tuning but it sounds good to me and thats all that matters.

 

I saw the pic, but can you show me on THIS picture where that is? I don't see an exit. I was thinking it has to be up high somewhere because the area is already short on mounting depth so there's no way you would put it behind the subs.

 

I like their logic along the lines of "port a box by drilling a hole in the back and VOILA!"

hows the lows? i seen these on facebook. just got 2 jl tw10s and wish i had low bass lol. but my subs hit the higher notes nice and clean
